Yesterday I tweeted a list of things people should know about their utility services.
It's pretty important stuff, and often, the powers-that-be depend on us all just paying our utility bills without knowing the details behind how these entities work.

ALT An infographic that describes things people should know about their utilities. The graphic begins with the heading: "Do you know your utilities?" The questions are: who provides your water, electricity, and gas? Who has control? Are your utilities regulated? By whom? How are rates set? Are affordability programs available? How are emergencies handled? The graphic ends with the text: "The Human Utility protects water affordability for senior citizens and families with low income in the United States by helping them with their water bills. You can find out more at humanutility.org."

This is why you should give money to @humanutility
Just talked to the Interim Director of @MiamiDadeWater Jose Cueto about the language around shutoffs and late fees on water bills.
This push moved them to work on changing the language on bills to reflect the moratorium, that ppl can pay what they can, and payment options. (1/n)

Thanks for connecting us to their office, Mayor @FrancisSuarez!

We also noted that options for assistance on Miami-Dade Water's website are buried and should be displayed more prominently (the front page!). He is having someone change that.
We'll wait to see the bill changes, but glad the conversation is moving forward.

Thanks for responding. But, the problem is that even if your county has a water shutoff moratorium in place, the statements you send people still suggest they'll be shutoff if they don't pay.
How can we get the language adjusted to not say that? @MayorDaniella

With lots of misinformation flying around, people rely on what statements they are getting in the mail directly from the county say.
This is a good service design opportunity to convey that there is a moratorium by adjusting statement language. @MayorDaniella @MiamiDadeWater

If the goal is to still collect revenue where you can, that's fine, but this is a dark way to do it. We have people calling @HumanUtility with total fear in their voices because they are still getting shutoff notices like these.

This sounds like an amazing opportunity. Just wanted to share that the Miami-Dade County Mayor & Bd of County Commissioners issued a moratorium on water disconnects & late fees for all County customers served by us since 3/12 & continues to remain in place for foreseeable future.
If our website is glitching a bit and you're not getting a proper receipt, please email us at [email protected]. Apologies. We'll make sure you get one.

If you want to help some people, here's a great way to do it. I'll donate a dollar for every like this gets in the next hour. $2 for every retweet. But please also consider donating yourself!
Thanks to @shervin's generosity, we're at $204,421 of $250K goal. That's $408,842 with foundation match for @humanutility. Epic times, epic generosity from everybody. ❤️💦

Heard from the Detroit Workforce Development Board this week. That's exciting because we at The @HumanUtility could start working with them to try to find jobs for people applying for help with their water bills (if they're interested). Now and long term.
Just updated our transparency board. 349 families helped so far this year with approx. $142,846.47 in water bill assistance.
If you know families in need, send them to us. Many places have shutoff moratoriums, but the bills aren't forgiven. detroitwaterproject.org/tran…
We're grateful to have your support!

So we’ve teamed up with MedAssist to raise $500 to pay off 5 months of💧bills for a #Detroit family this Winter through the @humanutility
Check out our updated flyer below and read on to learn how you can help!

We're glad to see Detroit FINALLY do something about shutoffs. No worries, Congresswoman. Our $400,000+ in water bill payments to Detroit over the years weren't mentioned either smh
If anything, we're interested in hearing the details of how the mayor intends to permanently end shutoffs. We are suspicious as he is running for re-election and he has largely ignored water shutoffs for YEARS.
We'll keep sending money to Detroiters in the meantime. 💦
No worries. The only thing you're getting from us tomorrow on #givingtuesday is a thank you email.
We're a little contrarian and don't think it makes a lot of sense to ask for donations on the same day every other organization will.
So, we'll say "thank you". :D
