We also need to recall that Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water already adopted the ancient astronaut theory and depicted "Adam."
Neon Genesis Evangelion was intended to be set in the same universe at first.

In my view, this work is not the first of its kind. For instance, the 1967 animated series "Princess Knight" features an evil sorcerer known as the "Demon King," while Grunwald -the antagonist in the 1968 film "Hols"-was very much a "Demon King" type of villain.
Daily reminder that Christian images were utilized a lot in pop occult context way before NGE, so Christianity in NGE is a pastiche of pastiche.
A lot of Evangelion’s Christian imagery was chosen because the staff thought it looked mysterious and cool.
Assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki explained that Christianity was relatively unfamiliar in Japan, so using crosses and other Christian imagery helped Evangelion stand out from other robot anime.
He even said that if they had known the show would become so popular in Europe and America, they might have reconsidered using it so freely.
