Dr. Ombongi, @HumanitiesUoN has penned a tribute to Prof. Godfrey Muriuki~
The death of Professor Godfrey Muriuki in Nyeri on 15 October 2026 marks the passing of more than an eminent historian. It marks the departure of a scholar who helped give African history intellectual legitimacy, institutional permanence and a distinctly Kenyan voice.
Yet his greatest legacy may lie beyond his publications. For 54 years, he remained at the University of Nairobi, building an institution while nurturing generations of scholars.
Muriuki belonged to the pioneering generation of African historians who challenged colonial assumptions that Africa possessed neither a meaningful past nor the intellectual resources to interpret it. Their task was not merely to recover forgotten histories, but to restore historical agency to African peoples. Through scholarly rigour and intellectual patience, Muriuki helped establish the intellectual independence of African history.

we can’t keep starting new litmags every five years while the ones our predecessors built lie in shallow graves. let’s dig them up, resurrect what we can, and ensure their survival. this is how we will build an ecosystem that outlives us.

Congratulations, Ndugu @Harrison_Otty! To say that you are an inspiration to many of us coming behind you would be an understatement.
Today's John S Mbiti Memorial Lecture was fantastic. An intergenerational celebration of a man whose brilliance, humility & commitment to Africa touched so many.
Also, I've overheard dreams of a Benezet Bujo Memorial Lecture. I also pray for a Laurenti Magesa Memorial Lecture. 💕
Prof Aloo Mojola reminds us that Okot p'Bitek and John S Mbiti were interlocutors, interacted and that their ideas were not as oppositional as some literature has made it to be.. here speaking of 'Wer pa Lawino' and African religions and philosophy
