There have been a number of thoughtful contributions to Canada's tax reform discussion in recent days, including calls for Canada to undertake a broader review of its tax system.
It's an important conversation to have.
But tax reform cannot simply be a discussion about tax rates. Or reduced to business competitiveness and attracting capital, important as those issues are.
It also needs to be a discussion about outcomes.
• What kind of communities do we want to live in?
• What role do we expect government to play?
• How do we build trust that public dollars are being spent effectively?
• How do we remain competitive without entering a race to the bottom?
In this clip from 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺, IFSD's Chief Economist Mostafa Askari and Executive VP @sahir_yow (Sahir Khan) alongside @hscoffield (Heather Scoffield) and Scott Pattison, explore why taxation has become such a difficult topic in politics. And how it needs to be connected to a broader conversation about trust, democracy, and the things our taxes pay for.
As 𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐫 put it:
“You got to ask yourself the more fundamental question of what kind of society do you want?”

Replying to @hscoffield
@hscoffield — a former business and economics journalist, Ottawa bureau chief for The Canadian Press and senior vice-president of strategy at the Business Council of Canada — joined The Canadian Tax Observatory in September 2025. She said her mission is to “stir up the conversation” on tax policy and to propose “practical solutions around tax that is pro growth and pro equality and pro simplicity all at the same time.”
Leading a start up, she said, is a lot of fun.
We asked her: What is the biggest issue with the tax system right now?
