One of the most rewarding parts of my job is when former students get back in touch. This one was from 12 years ago, I used to call him “lawyer boy” because he always asked incisive questions, incessantly. I’d probably get in trouble for such language now. Now he’s teaching the course I taught him. I sent the letter in this morning. Hey Professor Ellerman, Hopeful you are doing well. I wanted to let you know that I plan on applying to law school this upcoming cycle and wanted to reach out to see if you were open to writing a letter of rec for me? Reconnecting with you over the summer really made me reflect on my next step, from a professional development standpoint, and law school is where I want to be.   I am favoring Santa Clara right now, but we will see what we get into.  I did draft a potential letter to make it easier so you don't have to start from scratch (attached), because I know its been a minute since I last disrupted your class. Feel free to edit as needed, but I would humbly forever be grateful for your recommendation. Please let me know if you are open to it so I can add you as a recommender on LSAC so you can upload it on their site.   Warmest regards, Xxxx

I got the old fogie dose of the flu shot and my sixth Covid vax yesterday. No soreness from the flu shot but some soreness from the Covid one. One too many shots? Am I going to die now?

“Animal Kingdom is a half-day park.” @seafoamsafari
Ok, #DisTwitter- this one could be fun! "Out of all the FL parks, Magic Kingdom has the best quick service food options."

I can’t tell you how much I hate these pants. Not these in particular. Are you Ath? Are you Leisure? Can I wear with a dress shirt and blazer like jeans? (No).
Stretch cargo jeans that move with you, with pockets that actually hold something. Shop now at Ivy & Hope.

Halloween care packages going out to the Ellergrands. God willing this will be the last time we send four, as our fifth grandson is due early December.

A snapshot of 2020s academia. A newly published study tracked the success of political science PhDs on the job market in 2023. Note the difference between "non-URM" males and everyone else.

Difference between Disney and Dreamworks has never been clearer. Disney might make a joke about passing gas in the middle of a song; DW actually says “it’s a fart in the wind,” and then features that particular transgression in its commercials for its latest children’s release. So vulgar, but also so in-your face.

Wasn’t sure what to do with this leggy rubber tree; I’ve cut it back several times but it refuses to bush out. Today I pruned and repotted it and propagated the cuttings and added a couple smaller plants to hopefully give it some girth. I have to wait till it stops bleeding before putting it back in its place.

This is cool. When California’s grid gets strained on days like today, we allow Tesla to draw down our batteries (to an amount we choose) and sell the energy to PG&E. Notably, it’s good for us too as the pay rate to us during an event is four times their regular rate.

I had the windows washed this morning, like I do every fall and spring (Labor Day and Easter). That requires this bay window ledge assortment in my office to have to be removed. It gives me the opportunity to clean and polish everything, and rearrange the collection of loved curiosities as I see fit.

Birthday lunch with my dear friend and fellow department chair Candy. She’s currently cancer-free after some grueling rounds of chemo and radiation. A true survivor.
