In 1796, Gauss was still deciding whether his future lay in mathematics or philology.
Then one morning, while still in bed, he suddenly saw that a regular 17-gon could be constructed with straightedge and compass. The insight connected the problem to his work on roots of unity and primitive roots.
That discovery changed his life. Gauss chose mathematics.

In human freedom in the philosophical sense I am definitely a disbeliever. Everybody acts not only under external compulsion but also in accordance with inner necessity.
Schopenhauer's saying, that "a man can do as he will, but not will as he will," has been an inspiration to me since my youth up, and a continual consolation and unfailing well-spring of patience in the face of the hardships of life, my own and others'. This feeling mercifully mitigates the sense of responsibility which so easily becomes paralyzing, and it prevents us from taking ourselves and other people too seriously; it conduces to a view of life in which humor, above all, has its due place.

Kepler's mother Katharina was arrested for witchcraft in Leonberg in 1615. The local Vogt who initiated the trial accused fifteen women and burned eight.
Kepler suspended his career to conduct her legal defence himself, with help from Tübingen lawyers and theologians. The trial ran six years, she spent part of it chained in prison in her elderly age, and she was released. Witchcraft was regarded as hereditary, so a conviction would have ended Kepler's career too. It is one of the best documented German witch trials.
