ALT UVA Link Lab Graduate students, Kay Hutchinson & Md Mofijul Islam are pictured as the 2023 Link Lab Outstanding Graduate Research Awardees. “During her Ph.D., Kay has led and participated in multiple projects in close collaboration with other graduate and undergraduate students in the Link Lab and the robotic surgeons at the UVA hospital. Her work has been published (or under revision) at premier robotics conferences and medical robotics journals, including IJMRCAS, IJCARS, IEEE ICRA, and ISMR." “Mofijul published his first Ph.D. work at IROS-2020. This work introduced a novel multimodal self-attention approach designed to pay appropriate attention to spatial-temporal features from various modalities. The results suggested that his data-driven approach outperformed other methods from the literature for human activity recognition. He He further improved his feature learning approach to allow modalities to communicate with other modalities to make a consensus on a robust multimodal r

ALT Xugui Zhou and Nurani Saoda have both been selected as 2023 CPS Rising Stars. Xugui and Nurani will participate in the CPS Rising Stars 2023 Workshop held on May 31st. This workshop aims to identify and mentor outstanding PhD students and postdocs who are interested in pursuing academic careers in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) related areas. CPS are engineered systems that are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of computation and physical components. CPS technologies are transforming the way people interact with engineered systems, just as the Internet has transformed the way people interact with information. This workshop also aims to increase representation and diversity in CPS, especially encouraging women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. The workshop program committee reviewed applications and selected CPS Rising Stars based on the research excellence and academic leadership potential.
