As many others are saying (@elipariser @VWPickard @zittrain @akrasodomsk) maybe this is a moment to reflect on whether a system dominated by wholly profit-orientated and unaccountable communications platforms has served us well and what alternatives aimed at public good could be

Strange to hear some pundits saying Reform is the story of the night. Er, we’re about to have a Labour government with a majority of 170

“We’re not suddenly inundated with research on what kinds of digital communities are healthy for young people, or funding to experiment with new networks that could help them cope with anxiety and social pressure”. Spot on as always from @EthanZ on the gaps in digital regulation
The US could soon ban TikTok.
But that’s a negative solution to the internet’s problems, argues @EthanZ, @UMassAmherst
So, where is the positive one?

Playing out this level of drama through the medium of Twitter and emojis just makes it even more gripping - what is going on!!!!!
Everything about this is extremely insane. The idea that it is appropriate, even exciting!, for the prime minister to be deferential to a tech billionaire… the soft ball questions, the response that in the future there will be no jobs!! Mind boggling in both idea and execution.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asks Elon Musk about his thoughts on AI will impact the labour market.
'There will come a point were no job is needed', says Elon Musk - adding 'the new challenge will be: how do we find meaning a life?'.

From Rupert Murdoch’s ‘retirement’ statement. A paragraph which is about as dishonest as any you will read anywhere. Murdoch not only IS the elite, but ultimately decides what constitutes ‘the elite’ - gaslighting those who point out the dishonest

This is a great thread from @ellenejudson at @demos - particularly the question of - where is the citizen in digital policy making?
a busy day of #BudgetDay2023! and what, you might ask, has that meant for tech and digital? Lots to think about from the new tech regulation and quantum reports - linked below. Read on for three things to celebrate, and three things I think are missing...🤓
This is a pretty neat summary of all the things I am interested in (and lots of the people who are interesting in the field), but I would add one build - can thinking about the history of public service broadcasting help us to envisage these kinds of alternative futures?
What would it take to get out of this toxic wasteland? A better kind of social media is possible — if we want it. My first column for @washingtonpost @PostOpinions: wapo.st/3T7mPSN
