New on our Engineering blog: Creating in-house source control.
In May, we merged around 2,500 code changes per day. In September, we merged more than 30,000 per day. As a result, we became bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human (rather than agent) scale.
Here, we share how we built a new version control systemβand fully migrated our monorepo from gitβin five months: anthropic.com/engineering/reβ¦

Let's talk a little more about Margaret Hamilton because she deserves it
In 1961, Margaret Hamilton was tackling massive systems, having previously wrangled room-sized computers that blared like a foghorn whenever they crashed.
Her fix wasnβt just to patch the bug. Everytime there was a crash, she took a Polaroid of the programmer who wrote it, and a note on the mistake. That way, if it ever happened again, they wouldn't be starting from scratch. They could note patterns and the last person who triaged that failure could help.
This is a critical aspect of what she gave us. She didnβt stop at fixing errors. She studied their patterns so she could see them coming. She called them βthe enemy,β and she meant it.
Initially, when she was working on failure modes, higher-ups were errors wouldn't happen she actually named her program βForget It.β But failures did happen. And her mindset, and discipline sent men to the Moon.
Her Apollo software was built to expect the unexpected, and on Apollo 11 it recognized an overload mid-landing and kept the critical tasks running.
Every postmortem, every bug tracker, every βletβs make sure this never happens againβ carries a little of her in it.
Thank you, and rest in peace, Margaret Hamilton π

AI made me faster, but it didn't make programming more fun. Turns out those are two very different things π©π»βπ»

Due to AI, I have disabled external pull requests on all my repos.
Open source, as we have known it, was fun while it lasted. (Itβs been 15 years for me)
I will still maintain projects and handle issues.

π I made a small Chrome extension: a side panel that drives any site's WebMCP tools with Jev!
When you type, on every keystroke it picks the relevant page's tool, fills in the arguments, and tells you how sure it is.
Here it is grocery shopping:

BREAKING: OpenAI might have stolen another major proof.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAI may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and GΓ‘bor Kun were working on Gromovβs soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAI later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself.
And if the allegations raised by Levent AlpΓΆge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
AI is not discovering new mathematics.
AI is stealing human discovery.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

My first "holy shit" moment with GPT-6 Astra:
I asked it to create a world in Unreal Engine, and fill it with humans (each an Astra-powered agent) who all have to work together to survive.
A day later, I was in my bedroom and heard voices coming from the living room... I thought someone was in my apartment.
I walked out, honestly a little scared.
It was the Astra agents. They'd started talking to each other.
Fucking crazy.
Here's a brief clip (obviously not 100% perfect yet, but still, insane. sound on!):
Solved a problem by realizing I was asking the wrong question all along π«’
It was weird, slightly crazy, full of wrong turns, and reminded me how much I missed a real challenge ππ©π»βπ»

There are two gaps for engineers adopting AI:
The one in front of you (frontier users, running 10s-100s of agents) and the one behind you (companies whose devs opened Claude or Codex just a few times ever).
The second one is wider than you might guess. I've talked to many companies who are still very early in their agentic engineering journey.
If you're ahead, share what works. If you're behind, you don't need 100 agents - start with one loop you trust.
