We’ve started referring to one-off projects from existing clients as “side quests” and it’s my new favorite thing.
COVID-19 was announced almost five years ago.
The time to stop using it as a catch-all "times, they are a changing" in content marketing was at least two years ago.
"When my students turn in fully AI-generated papers, they aren’t necessarily incorrect or poorly written. But they’re uninteresting. They feel like they were written by someone who wasn’t in the class."

Tired: “Freelancing doesn’t give you the job security of a FT role.”
Wired:
Freelancing has given me 30-50% raises every year.
Freelancing has given me more security, with 22 clients instead of 1 employer.
Freelancing has given me an entire month off.
"I can't convince my boss to let me do [fill in the blank]."
Try this:
Get approval for an experiment.
Show them what you might be able to achieve.
Show your boss examples of what "good" looks like.
Then, you can build your case from there.

Content marketing is not just SEO.
Great content starts with a good brief.
But you can't pull a good brief out of thin air. This is the template we always start with.
»It ensures we connect dots btwn strategy & execution
»It helps us take clients' content a few layers deep
»It gets everyone on the same page
What people think editing is: “Missing oxford comma.”
What editing IS: “We never revisit what we mention in the intro, can we weave that in?”
“These bullets are better as h3s. Can we expand?"
“Let’s get specific, with examples."
“This section is unnecessary, let’s cut it.”

🚨Head of Content job alert 🚨
My friends at @heybeamcontent are hiring!
I’ve been doing fractional managing editor work for them the past few months to fill a gap. Well, they’re now ready to bring on their 4th full time hire.
Here’s what my experience of working with Beam has been like:
-Amazing team. I didn’t know it was possible to get this many nice people in a room at once.
-Amazing freelancers. Holy shit. It’s been an absolute pleasure editing drafts. Their writers are literally dripping with talent.
-Fascinating work. I’ve been running interviews with extremely smart SMEs about cutting edge topics. It’s heady in the best way.
-Insane organization. This group is on top of their shit. I don’t know how else to say it. It’s frictionless.
-Different, in the best way. They don’t focus on SEO. They’re more interested in content driven by conversations that actually help buyers make decisions. I haven’t had to squeeze in even one keyword. (Don’t come for me SEO! I said different, not necessarily better).
Alright enough from me. They’re got a job description up on Superpath. Gonna pop it right here.

Two favors:
1. I have zero control over the hiring decision so please don’t DM me about it, just apply!
2. Please comment for reach! Let’s make waves so Beam and the perfect candidate can find each other and live happily ever after.
Cheers!
