Los “desvisados” están de vuelta.
Hace 20 años en Nicaragua vi de cerca el poder de las restricciones de visa. Hoy analizo por qué pueden funcionar, pero también por qué importan la evidencia, la consistencia y el debido proceso.

The “desvisados” are back.
Twenty years ago in Nicaragua, I saw how powerful visa restrictions could be. My new Latinoamérica21 piece looks at why they work—and why evidence, consistency, and due process still matter.

Bolivia needs more than economic adjustment. Fiscal stability matters, but lasting recovery also requires independent courts, transparency, and stronger institutions. My new op-ed in Bolivia's @grupoeldeber:

Bolivia necesita algo más que un ajuste económico. La estabilidad fiscal importa, pero sin justicia independiente, transparencia y lucha contra la corrupción, la recuperación será frágil. Mi artículo en @grupoeldeber:

Sixty-two years ago, on October 14, 1964, Daddy learned that he had been selected to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He was just 35 years old.
The honor recognized his leadership in the nonviolent struggle for civil rights. He accepted it on behalf of a movement whose courage and sacrifice had shown the world the power of nonviolence.
Daddy’s philosophy calls us to confront injustice, transform unjust systems and affirm the dignity of every human being. It requires courage, discipline and love in action.
Sixty-two years later, that work remains urgent. The responsibility to advance it remains ours.
We honor my father’s legacy by practicing nonviolence in our daily lives and continuing the work to create the Beloved Community.

@realDonaldTrump’s “Shield of the Americas” is built on quicksand. @LAPOP_Lab 2026: 8 of 11 presidents members of the “Shield” are under water. And trust in the US govt is lowest since 2012 (even in US “closest” allies). [NB: recent data shows Fujimori already under water too].

Daniel Ortega has forced journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro into exile twice. But he hasn't been able to silence him.
From abroad, Chamorro and his team at Confidencial continue to investigate Nicaragua’s authoritarian regime, document its abuses, and keep independent journalism alive.
Can journalism from exile help keep the flame of freedom alive in Nicaragua?

The “desvisados” are back.
Two decades ago, U.S. diplomats in Nicaragua coined the term for officials who lost their American visas amid corruption and attacks on democratic institutions.
Now Washington is using visa restrictions across Latin America again—to denounce and expose corruption, narcotics, diplomatic disputes— and even national security concerns.
Will “desvisar” change behavior?
Steven E. Hendrix, a former U.S. diplomat and senior USAID official, analyzes the latest developments and their implications for Americas Quarterly.

The “desvisados” are back.
20 years ago in Nicaragua, we used U.S. visa restrictions aggressively against corruption & attacks on democracy. Now Washington is using the tool again across Latin America — including family members.

Bolivia’s problem is not that it has two ministries too many. The real test of Rodrigo Paz’s restructuring is whether it produces fiscal discipline, legal certainty, stronger institutions & a government that works.
