This incredible review of The Mythmakers (review by Lev Grossman!) in the NYT has left me crying in a NYC Starbucks. nytimes.com/2024/09/27/books…

If you’ve never read a @hendrixart book, I heartily encourage you to do so. He proves you can say serious things in playful ways and plumb the depths of the faith through visual and illustrative ways.
Also: he’s a really good dude.

Our age needs men and women who have the courage to do good even when it comes at a cost. Draw close to those who are alone, support those who are weary, and seek out those who have drifted away. Have the courage to forgive, to begin again, and to engage in dialogue.
the church actually can lead from time to time
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

“the terrible irony that good often does evil …”
"People have often asked me what moves me most," said Tolkien. "I think the most tragic point in the whole story is the terrible irony that good often does evil. The most tragic moment is when Sam in his protectiveness says, 'Take your hands off.' And therefore defeats Gollum's repentance. Because that seems to be very true to life."

NEW: I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company’s “responsible gaming” safeguards.
Spoiler Alert: They invited me into the VIP program after just one week. Here’s how I yeeted $20K+ ripping riskier and risker bets 🧵
I’m a huge fan of @LebatardFriends and @pablofindsout but a reasonable charge of hypocrisy is coming. If they wish to do reporting for the public good and take money from gambling companies, there is a massive conflict of interest. Preying on the vulnerable is the DK model.
Replying to @JakePearsonProP
As the @nytimes reported, DraftKings uses machine learning & data scientists to entice losing customers with promos to keep going — even if those are the customers most at risk of becoming addicts. The company says it doesn’t unfairly target people.
