💪 Must you lift heavier to build bigger muscles? A new study found that both fixed-load and progressive resistance training increased muscle size, but progressive loading produced greater gains Progression matters—but adding weight isn’t the only way pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4287…

Ergothioneine is called a 'longevity vitamin' It's a potent antioxidant that fights oxidative stress and inflammation synergistically with other antioxidant systems In mice, it's been seen to increase lifespan by up to 29% (PMID: 38446314) However, supplement trials in humans have been limited. A single hard set per exercise can build muscle and strength—even in trained individuals. An 8-week RCT found similar strength gains with failure vs. 2 RIR, with a possible small hypertrophy advantage for failure. Train hard, not necessarily longer. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4024…

Aerobic training can help stop and even reverse shrinkage in a brain area that's crucial for learning and memory. In a randomized trial of 120 older adults, aerobic walking increased hippocampal volume by ~2% over one year. The stretching group lost ~1.4%. The protocol: - 3 sessions per week - Gradually build to 40 minutes - Moderate intensity That increase was equivalent to roughly 1–2 years of typical age-related hippocampal volume loss. Greater improvements in VO2 max were associated with greater increases in hippocampal volume. Full video: youtu.be/LNAy-oq-Lwc PMID: 21282661

The concept of “muscle memory” is well established, referring to the phenomenon whereby previously developed muscle can be regained more readily following a period of detraining. It is commonly believed that these effects are attributed to additional nuclei acquired during training, which are permanently retained even if you stop working out. But is this really how muscle memory works? A recent review by Serrano et al (PMID: 40768525) challenges this conventional explanation, suggesting that the mechanisms underlying muscle memory may be more complex than previously thought. Some key takeaways: --Although short periods of detraining generally result in little change in myonuclear number, evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that myonuclei may be lost with prolonged detraining or muscle atrophy. At a minimum, the evidence remains conflicting, calling into question the notion that myonuclei are permanently retained. --Methods matter. Accurately counting myonuclei is technically challenging, and differences in measurement techniques may help explain conflicting findings. --The mechanisms remain unresolved. Retained myonuclei may contribute to muscle memory under certain conditions, but the evidence does not establish that they are the sole—or necessarily primary—mechanism. --Other factors may contribute. Persistent molecular adaptations, particularly epigenetic changes that regulate gene expression, have been shown to enhance the hypertrophic response when resistance training is resumed (e.g., PMID: 40183698). Bottom line: Muscle memory is a well-established phenomenon, but the notion that it is driven solely by the permanent retention of myonuclei is increasingly being questioned. While retained myonuclei may contribute to this effect, lasting molecular modifications may also play an important role in facilitating muscle regrowth when training resumes. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…

Beetroot juice may offer a small boost in aerobic capacity (VO₂ max), particularly for recreational exercisers. A benefit in highly trained athletes isn't clearly demonstrated. Oral bacteria convert beetroot’s nitrate into nitrite, which your body can then convert into nitric oxide. This molecule relaxes blood vessels and may help deliver more oxygen to working muscles. This biology interests me beyond fitness. Years ago, I gave my mother beet extract powder after she was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Two weeks later, her blood pressure measured normal. My mother-in-law had a similar experience! Using beetroot juice for exercise was something I started considering after interviewing @DrAndyGalpin on the podcast! I can attest to its effects after using it multiple times before a hard workout.
