🌟 Curious about how AI perceives African identities and the cultural stereotypes it inherits?
Our Afristereo project takes you on a deep dive into how popular AI models reflect biases in gender, ethnicity, profession, and more across Nigeria, Kenya, and Senegal.
This article reveals eye-opening findings on the stereotypes present in AI systems trained with less than 2% African content, showing why African perspectives are essential to building fair and responsible AI.

Can AI detect bias if it doesn’t understand local context?
With Afristereo, we’re exploring a stereotype dataset rooted in real voices from Senegal, Kenya & Nigeria.
👉 Join our webinar to explore early insights & how this can improve AI fairness.

The problem?
Current stereotype evaluation tools in NLP and ML (like StereoSet, CrowS-Pairs) were built with limited geographic and cultural diversity.
This leads to:
– Misrepresentation
– Oversimplification
– Reinforced global bias in AI systems
How do you take care of your mental health?
Maybe it’s prayer.
Maybe it’s journaling.
Maybe it’s pretending you’re fine.
We’re running a study to better understand how young Africans are really managing their mental health, with faith, culture, silence, or tech.
📍 Ages 16–25 in Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria & Kenya 📲

🗣️ Let’s talk about AI beyond the hype, how are people really using it in Africa?
From Lagos to Dakar, more and more people are using ChatGPT and other AI tools in unexpected ways:
➡️ To manage their stress
📅 Organize their daily life
At YUX, we asked ourselves that question.
And it’s why we launched the Kitala Cultural AI Lab — to make sure African voices, data and contexts are reflected in the way AI is designed and used.
Here’s what we’re working on:
🗂️ Curating datasets to detect cultural bias
🗣️ Building tools in Wolof, Yoruba and Hausa
📊 And conducting a survey on trust and AI usage in 🇳🇬 🇸🇳 🇰🇪 🇬🇭

🧵We’re launching a new survey on how people in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Senegal use AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Meta AI.
Here’s why it matters:
Most AI studies focus on the West.
But how are these tools used across African contexts with our languages, cultures?
This survey is open to everyone 18+ in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Senegal It takes about 5 minutes.
All answers are anonymous.
Let’s shape AI development with our realities in mind.

📍 Only 0.5% of publicly available datasets come from Africa.
Yet these datasets power the AI systems shaping global healthcare, education, and policies.
If our voices aren’t in the data, we’re not in the decisions.
