Back from my relaxing vacation. I run my personal website on php v7.0 with a CA cert from eMuhdra on firecracker I last updated about a month ago. Anything I should check in on now that i'm back?

This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.
The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.
Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.
To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

Woah, this is way better than mine:
- Crossplay with PC games
- Server browser
- HD graphics at 100FPS
Very nice
Inspired by @mitchellhynes' original work, I spent the weekend getting Halo 1 working in the web browser.
We live in an incredible time where all software is malleable and anything is possible. It's incredible to see what the open source community can do, and it's only going to get wilder from here on out
efficiency, productivity, speed
we keep worshipping these words like they are what we live for
ship faster
merge more
manage more agents
compress every loop
remove every pause
turn every hour into output
but what is the point of endless production if there is no time left to think deeply?
not react
not optimize
not summarize
not clear the queue
think
to sit with a question long enough that your real intention starts to appear
to find the purpose underneath the motion
to ask whether the thing being accelerated should exist at all
ai could be a new canvas
a way to make strange things
personal things
impossible things
tools, worlds, poems, games, interfaces, films, languages, rituals
things that let more people touch the shape of their own imagination
but instead, so much of it is becoming slop factories
more content
more funnels
more tickets
more fake work pretending to be value
you can merge 2000 prs
you can manage 500 agents
you can wake up to dashboards proving that the machine kept moving while you slept
but what is the point if you only sleep 5 hours a day?
what is the point if you stop talking to other humans?
stop learning about the past?
stop playing?
stop wandering?
stop being surprised?
what is the point if your whole life becomes optimizing the system that is consuming you?
speed is not meaning
scale is not wisdom
automation is not freedom if it only makes everyone run faster
and where are we running?
toward what?
a world where every person becomes a manager of machines, and every machine produces more things no one had the time to truly want?
the danger is not that ai makes us lazy
the danger is that ai makes us endlessly busy
that it gives us infinite production before we have found intention
infinite execution before we have developed taste
infinite motion before we have learned how to be still
maybe the real frontier is not more speed
maybe it is discernment
knowing what not to make
knowing when to stop
knowing when the most productive thing is to sleep, read history, call a friend, play with a cat, walk without tracking it, or stare at the ceiling until the false urgency dissolves
tools should give us more life
not turn life into a tool
if ai is going to matter, it should not just help us produce more
it should help us become more human
more imaginative
more free
otherwise, it’s the same old factory
just without humans

🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right
This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.
“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”
“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”
Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

The permitting cost for *any* new construction is so high that it wouldn't make any sense to build a single-family home smaller than 1400 sq/ft. That's a condo or townhome.

As a twenty-something who came of age in San Francisco, I agree: people there are often extremely intelligent and also extremely bad at parties lol.
On worldliness though I think some of the deficit comes from the arrogance produced by Silicon Valley’s immense power to shape the
Since moving to the Bay last year, I have noticed that although Bay Areans are very high in intelligence, they are often very low in worldliness. That is, they don't know how the world actually works.
The pacing letter is yet another exhibit supporting this assessment.
For purposes of this tweet, let's take for granted that anxiety about emerging risks from AI is warranted, particularly as AI research accelerates.
What are "the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development?" Whatever else they may include, they likely include coercive measures whose form and administration remain unspecified.
How do "international efforts" work? Unlike most of the signatories of the letter, I have been a State Department advisor and have participated in multiple treaty negotiations. I have also been a member of technical committees for UN technical agencies.
The international sector is unbelievably dysfunctional. Every single treaty or international agreement is an opportunity for every participant to manipulate the much broader policy environment. Often the participants don't care about the object of the agreement, and are instead trying to use the agreement as leverage for something else. I have seen countries use their limited leverage in multilateral agreements to try to kneecap American industry, get around sanctions, create a pretense of international justification for domestic illiberalism, or steer technology in an authoritarian direction.
The damage from this dysfunction is limited by the fact that there are zero major countries (and not that many smaller countries) who will actually bind themselves in meaningful ways that they don't narrowly want. If a previously signed treaty turns out to be inconvenient, it is often subtly ignored or reinterpreted.
In addition, treaty delegations working on industrial issues generally reflect the full spectrum of special interests involved in an issue. A US AI treaty delegation might be led by a State Department ambassador, but he will be advised by representatives of the interagency, major labs, other major tech companies, tech investors, civil society, etc.
“International efforts,” therefore, is not a reassuring answer to the governance problem; it is the name of another enormous, unresolved governance problem.
So assume you survive this special interest circus and hell freezes over and you produce an agreement that narrowly does something to "pace the frontier" of AI development in an enforceable and effective way. The enforcement of that thing is still unspecified, and is probably bad. The fact that an AI researcher in the Bay Area can imagine a sensible, minimally coercive enforcement regime compatible with liberalism does not mean that is where we end up.
The pacing letter therefore converts uncertainty about the future pace of AI development into a confident collective demand for an unspecified exercise of power determined through a dysfunctional international political system.
Seems bad.

For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.
AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.
