#ArtandCulture | On October 5, reports emerged that Prime Minister @narendramodi has gifted three unique artifical Indian cheeses to Swiss President @ParmelinG during a diplomatic meeting. All three cheeses were sourced from Mumbai's @eleftheriaindia by Musam Narang. Before this, at the fourth World Cheese Championship of Brazil in April 2026, Indian artisanal cheeses won four prestigious prizes, three of which were bagged by Eleftheria. PM Modi himself took to twitter to laud this achievement (see quoted tweet below). To some, this may come as a surprise as cheese seems almost a foreign concept for many Indians, but it is in fact entrenched in the culinary history of our country, dating back a millenia. In an article published on our website, 'India's Cheese Awakening,' written by Food Historian Tanushree Bhowmick @helloforktales writes, "We have a rich basket of cheeses with fascinating origin stories that surprise foreigners and, sadly, most Indians too" To trace back the history of cheese in India, the savoury dairy product's growth story, and projections of expansion of the cheese market in the country, read her article here: indiasworld.in/indias-cheese… #narendramodi #cheese #indiancheese #brie #guyparmelin (Image Courtesy- 1: Narendra Modi/X, 2,3: eleftheria, 4: Wikimedia Commons)
Cheese from India makes its mark globally… India made an impressive debut at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026, which is a vibrant international competition for cheese and dairy products. Four Indian products won medals, including 1 Super Gold, 2 Golds and 1 Silver. The Super Gold was won by Eleftheria Gulmarg (Brie Style), the Golds were won by Yak Churpi-Soft, Nordic Farm, Leh, Ladakh and Eleftheria Brunost (Whey Cheese) while the Silver was won by Eleftheria Kaali Miri (Belper Knolle Style). Congratulations to Mausam Narang and Thenlay Nurboo. Such successes strengthen India’s artisanal dairy sector on the world stage.

Now, in the light of renegotiation of the Ganga Water Treaty in the cards, and the new government in West Bengal, which is backed by a vegetarian ideology and immigrant rhetoric, Bangladesh’s success with this still remains.
