Artemisia Gentileschi was raped at 17 by a friend of her father. During the trial, she had to recount the assault repeatedly. She was even tortured with cords around her fingers to test whether she was telling the truth. Her attacker never went to prison. Artemisia’s reputation, however, was ruined. Just after the trial, she painted Judith Beheading Holofernes. Judith takes justice into her own hands, acting with determination, without fear or hesitation.
