Building a Retail-Focused Brand Collective with Petra Brands | Scaling AI Creative with Reely … and dabble in manufacturing

Retailers are followers, not leaders. But each one follows something different. Whole Foods reads your ingredients. Target checks your social. Walmart looks at true sales and pricing. TJX cares about price. Same brand, four different decks. Pitch what THEY care about.

As AI gets more streamlined, clients with a simple idea and a clear picture won't come to us. They'll just make it themselves. They'll come when they don't know what they want, or when they need someone to say "that's a bad idea." The judgment is the service now.

Nobody makes a spontaneous purchase on a few-thousand-dollar creative project. Especially not a monthly commitment. So all the impulse tactics that move product for our clients do almost nothing for the agency itself. You're not selling a purchase. You're selling a relationship.

Most retail categories get reviewed once a year. Miss it, wait 12 months. Party supplies? 4–5 reviews a year. Seasonal shelf keeps turning. More review windows = more at-bats. That math should shape what products you build. Off-price has no cycle at all, sell in whenever.

We once spent half a pitch selling a buyer on our US business. They were the Canadian buyer. "I don't buy for the US." Oh. Okay. Pitches rarely fail on product. They fail on preparation, know your product cold, and know exactly who's across the table.

We built a brand with zero Instagram posts and a barebones website. 6 months later it's selling well in national retail. The experiment: can product alone break in, no audience? Built for off-price speed — buyers decide weekly. Trend hits, we're first on shelf. So far: yes.

My favorite way to think about AI in creative work is home builders. A couple hundred years ago it was hammers, handsaws, and a lot of guys stacking logs. Then power tools. Then prefab. Construction companies didn't go away because the drill was invented.

Spent Wednesday at Walmart's Let's Grow summit. One takeaway: Walmart Marketplace is the most underrated front door in retail. Buyers want comparable traction, and nothing beats winning in front of Walmart's own customer, on their own platform. The smartest audition in retail.

A client signed with us for product photography at a production rate. To this day they have never sent us a single physical product. Everything has been AI image generation. I think about that every time someone asks me if this stuff is really changing the industry.

Uncomfortable truth: a lot of buyers don't know what will sell either. They're taking shots and figuring it out, same as you. A buyer's yes gets you on shelf. It doesn't guarantee the shelf works. Spread your bets. Treat it like shots on goal.

Walmart understands its shopper better than most brands understand theirs. The products that win there are instantly understandable in 4 seconds. That's not boring that's discipline. Our rule now: innovate 20%. Stand out, but never make the shopper learn something mid-aisle.

We ranked #1 out of ~30 brands at a retailer's pitch competition. Over a year later: still no PO. No rejection either. Just nothing. Separately, a "100% done" Walmart deal died because the buyer changed jobs. Never forecast on a verbal yes. Never stop filling the pipeline.

We run 6 brands. We never pitch 6 brands. To a retailer: one brand, full conviction. Portfolio pitches read as spray and pray. To a distributor: all 6. They see six swings at a category instead of one. Retailers buy conviction. Distributors buy optionality.

You can pitch a buyer a perfect 10 in April and still be a no. Their review period is October. Buyers buy on their cycle, not yours. Also: don't pitch Walmart your Whole Foods numbers. Not their customer. CVS and Kroger comps are. Know the calendar. Know the comps.

A buyer isn't taking a chance on you. They're taking a brand OFF their shelf to put you on it. Come in cheaper with the same velocity = you just made that retailer less money. Every pitch answers one question: better substitution, or truly incremental? Pick one. Bring data.

A $50M vendor cannot get a call back. Cases sit open for weeks with no human response. Your brand is now competing with thousands of others for attention from a support team that no longer has ownership of your account. This is not a temporary glitch. This is a structural collapse and most 1P brands have not adjusted their strategy to reflect it. The brands surviving this are not waiting for Amazon to fix it. They are building internal capabilities or partnering with specialists who understand the new reality. Is your Amazon 1P account properly supported right now? Your blended margin is not your real margin. It is a number that makes everything look fine while one channel quietly destroys the other. Most brands running both channels never see this breakdown. They see one blended number and assume the business is healthy. It is not. One channel is subsidising the other. And the one doing the subsidising is usually your highest-revenue channel. Do you know which channel is quietly costing you margin right now? Get your free audit NOW! swiftstart.com/ 👇 #AmazonFBA #EcommerceStrategy #SwiftStart

Two keyword strategies. One Amazon account. Completely different outcomes. The difference is not budget. It is not luck. It is not even experience. It is data. Your Search Query Performance Report is sitting inside Seller Central right now telling you exactly which terms are driving impressions without clicks, which ones convert, and where your ranking is leaking. Most sellers never open it. The ones who do? They are the ones on the right side of this image. Stop guessing. Start listening to the data. Which side of this image is your keyword strategy on right now? #AmazonSEO #AmazonSellers #EcommerceStrategy #Swiftstart

"Organic dog paw balm" 150,000 monthly impressions. Terrible purchase rate. Why? Buyers wanted lick-safe ingredients. No listing said it clearly. That is not a listing problem. That is a product gap. And Amazon just gave you a tool to find hundreds more just like it. Swipe to learn how to read the signals and turn gaps into winning products.
