The poet John Keats famously wrote, “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.” Kabbalah understood this relationship long before Keats. And hidden within that relationship is a deeper meaning and purpose of Israel.

Upon creating Eve, God says, "And he (man) shall cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." This phrase equals 1393. 1393 is a most significant number in pure number theory: The midpoint of 1393 squared is 985 squared! 985 = "The Cause of all causes" (סבת כל הסבות), a connotation of the Creator Almighty, blessed be He. The miracle of the union of male and female and the birth of new life derives directly from The Cause of all causes, the all-encompassing infinite light of the Creator. But what does number theory have to say about this phenomenon? This pair of numbers, 985 and 1393, is one of an infinite number of such pairs (couples, male and female, where the female is the midpoint of the male, as taught in Kabbalah), which evolve, one pair from the previous pair, as a recursive function, based on Pell's equation: In our case, it all begins with 1 and 1 (Adam and Eve, who were created to be equal in stature): 1 squared is the midpoint of 1 squared. Then comes 5 and 7: 5 squared is the midpoint of 7 squared. Then comes 29 and 41: 29 squared is the midpoint of 41 squared. Then comes 169 and 239: 169 squared is the midpoint of 239 squared. Then comes our example: 985 squared is the midpoint of 1393 squared. What is the rule? Multiply the first number in a pair by 6, then subtract the corresponding number from the previous pair. And do the same for the second number. In other words: multiply the present by 6 (the six days of creation), subtract the past, and you reach the future! Let's see how this works with regard to the above example: 6 times 169 = 1014, minus 29 = 985; 6 times 239 = 1434, minus 41 = 1393! Another beautiful phenomenon: the sum of the two numbers in one pair is the difference of the two numbers in the next pair! Continue to contemplate this recursive function (there are others like it), and your eyes will open to the wonders of number theory, the language of creation!

The gematria of the first of the Ten Commandments (the all-inclusive commandment), "I am God your God Who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage," the commandment to believe in God the Redeemer (the personal God Almighty), is 2495. In the Standard Model, this is one of the most important constants of nature. It is the ratio of the charm quark mass to the electron mass. The function of the charm quark is to establish symmetry between the elementary particles in nature. Without it, the Standard Model would fall apart. Just like no one knows (for the time being) why 137 (the riddle of creation), no one knows why 2495. But we have the clue. Faith is the basis of symmetry and stability - rectification - in the soul and in nature.

Losing does not have to make us smaller. Sometimes it loosens the ego enough for us to see ourselves more clearly. The ability to admit “I lost” can itself become the beginning of victory.
