The "lookalike competition" thing that's started popping up periodically in NYC is probably the most crystalized example of what the influencer culture - ification of New York looks like.

My final thought on Wolfson at Gagosian is that it was impressive and refreshing to see such an anarchic and irreverent show in a major museum. I'm not sure there's any other artists with Wolfson's level of success that have such a flippant attitude (in a good way).

That being said the show on its own was not particularly interesting and far from his best work. But again, Wolfson is singular in being a mainstream, highly successful artist whose attitude is closer to the iconoclasm of modernists than post-2016 art world orthodoxy

This show also seemed like the first in a while that had impact beyond the art world. I saw friends talking about Wolfson who had never shown interest in contemporary art before.

I accidentally kickstarted a theatrical renaissance and now all my friends want to be PLAYWRIGHTS. Whoops!

It occurs to me that entering the singularity in a climate of social hatred and warfare, where every thought is met with hostility, sincere dialogue is almost impossible, and attempts to explore new thoughts out loud are immediately shunted into prefabricated binaries might not go so well

British dominance of the IDM genre in the 90s and 00s should’ve been as big a story as Britpop but somehow never was.

My book Anti-Singularity is out in print today! If you're interested in a philosophical conversation around AI, Bay Area Rationalism, doomerism, accelerationism and alternative futures, order a copy from Network Press network.press/products/anti-…
This is a timely follow up to @pmarca's Techno Optimist Manifesto. Anti-Singularity is a profound, well reasoned argument against AI doomerism, with a recommendation on what should take its place.

I think it’s appropriate that the drugs of the 2020s are Adderall and Ketamine. Today even when you’re partying or rebelling and doing something “naughty” you are taking psychiatric therapeutic drugs. Rebellion itself has been medicalized and absorbed by therapy culture

AI is apocalyptic only insofar as it reveals where we’ve already been —stagnation and slop— and everything society and culture had been missing: dynamism, innovation, the future
Peter Thiel describes what he sees as America's anti-tech turn from outer space to inner space, listing a few characteristic phenomena: Woodstock, identity politics, "Jordan Peterson" (laughter from the Nashville audience). The fact that AI "feels so different" from other innovations of the past 50 years (including Bitcoin) provides retrospective proof of his stagnation thesis, Thiel says.
