Pretty stunning: *No* major estimate of climate change’s financial costs includes the cost of these wildfire smoke days, @MarshallBBurke tells me In other words, any estimate you’ve ever read of climate change’s costs did not include the cost of this heatmap.news/climate/wildfir…

this is a great piece on how TikTok shapes the aesthetic of food / restaurants. Instagram forced food to make for pristine, dramatic static images, now, TikTok requires moments of motion and "activation" because of video grubstreet.com/article/tikto…

His failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said. Stunning reporting here. ⁦@propublica⁩ propublica.org/article/clare…

A thorough and even handed article on our @spawning_ work in @slate by @heathertal We've been calling for an ideal of opt-in only training since 2017, but there is no legal requirement for AI companies to follow that. Our opt-outs offer a practical and robust standard. The more get behind it, the more reason for companies to honor it. We can have very strong models that respect the wishes of individuals. I'd argue that over time such an agreement benefits both parties. slate.com/technology/2023/03…

New on the role of DNA in the Idaho murders: I learned what prompted police focused on their suspect and why there was no mention of forensic genealogy in the affidavit even though the technique was used. This has implications far beyond this case. bit.ly/3ZvN0VJ

The biggest tech companies in the world imagine a future where AI will replace a lot of human labor. But this vision ignores the fact that much of what we think of as “AI” is actually powered by tedious, low-paid human labor. vice.com/en/article/wxnaqz/a…

24 hours ago, a federal judge vacated @CDCgov mask mandate on airplanes This was deeply disappointing CDC scientists had asked for 15 days to make a more data-driven durable decision We should have given it to them But I'll continue to follow CDC guidance & mask up on planes

At DCA, going through (empty) security maskless and agent tells me he won’t let me through without a mask. I tell him mandate was overturned CDC issued a statement confirming and he said it didn’t apply to TSA. Something about TSA enforcement extended to May 8? True?
