ALT What is a Blue Badge? The Blue Badge scheme enables easier parking for people with disabilities who would benefit from accessible parking spaces. You can use the badge when you are either the driver or passenger in a car and the Blue Badge is associated with you and not the car so you can use it whatever car you are in. A Blue Badge is valid for 3 years and enables you to park in disabled parking bays in car parks (often signalled by yellow paint and the outline of a person in a wheelchair in the parking spot). These spots will often be closer to the entrance/exit of the car park to mean less walking and often (but not always) have free parking.

ALT Who is eligible? Those who automatically eligible: Are registered blind or are severely sight impaired. Receive mobility-related disability support such as the mobility component of the DLA/PIP. You are still eligible for a badge if: You can’t walk at all, you can’t walk without help or the use of mobility aids e.g. crutches. You struggle to walk because of pain, breathlessness or the time it takes. Walking is dangerous for your health and safety. You are terminally ill. You drive but have a severe disability in both arms that means you can’t operate pay and display machines. You are a risk to yourself or others near vehicles, in traffic or car parks or find it impossible to control your actions. You struggle when planning or following a journey. You are frequently very anxious or fearful of public space.

ALT Blue Badge application process. It can take up to 12 weeks for a decision to be made on your Blue Badge application. You can apply online: https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge You don’t have to complete all of the Blue Badge application sections at once - it can take a while to fill in! Sections include your personal details, attaching a photo that will be printed on your Blue Badge and answering relevant questions e.g. providing details about walking aids, pain levels and ability to complete simple journeys. You will then also need to attach supporting evidence from medical professionals. You’ll get an email if your application is successful and your Blue Badge will be sent to you in the post, along with a timer clock and an information booklet.
