Neurotypical people view time as a linear river, smoothly flowing from past to present to future. They can feel the passage of 15 minutes instinctively.
The Reality: For an ADHD brain, time is largely binary. There are only two zones: "NOW" and "NOT NOW." If a deadline is next week, it lives in "not now," making it practically invisible. When it hits the "now" zone, it arrives with the force of an immediate crisis. This isn't poor planning; it’s a fundamental difference in how the brain perceives the temporal landscape.

If someone with a chronic illness leaves a holiday gathering early, please don’t ask them to explain why.
And please don’t guilt them into staying.
Leaving early usually means they noticed warning signs or can no longer handle the situation.
It means they’re trying to prevent a crash.
It means they’re trying to protect the days that are to follow.
The kind thing to do is to let them leave without any pressure.
