We've been quiet, but we've been busy! Delighted to share that in recent weeks we have received 3 NIH R01s to continue our studies of adaptive immunity in the gut! As such, we are recruiting post-docs with strong interests and expertise in mucosal immunology and (1/3)
antigen-specific T and B cell responses to commensal microbes, helminths and auto-antigens. Qualified candidates should apply directly to me with a CV and statement of current research and open questions in mucosal immunology that excite them. Happy to answer questions too. (2/3)
More info on the positions is available here - careers-benaroyaresearch.ici…... - Please repost! 3/3.

Dr. Sarah Holton from @UWMedicine is the recipient of a K23 award to support her efforts to define the immune cell populations that lead to progression of fibrosis in Interstitial Lung Disease.
Congratulations Dr. Holton! bit.ly/4g0cHq4
It's that time of year again! Have you published an insightful paper about microbiome science as a post-doc? Think you can explain it clearly in 1000 words or fewer? You should enter the Science/Noster Microbiome Prize competition - science.org/content/page/nos…
Ok, also going to try something new - hoping for the science engagement of old - @harrison-lab.bsky.social

First of many awards and much fantastic science to come! Congrats @AiingLim!!
Congrats🥂 to Asst Prof Ai Ing Lim, a 2024 Searle Scholar for her lab's work toward understanding maternal-offspring immune crosstalk, that is, how the immune systems of moms and their offspring inform and tolerate each other! molbio.princeton.edu/news/20…

A new approach to identifying and investigating B cells specific to gut microbes, developed by a research team led by BRI’s @sheenamverma30 and @harrison_oj, is detailed in an article published today in @ImmunityCP: bit.ly/3UQ0BXA

Furthermore, we mapped how defined mutations in recurrent BCRs influenced antibody affinity for SFB3340 antigen binding. This last step we couldn’t have done without great collaborators Sam Scharffenberger and Andy McGuire at Fred Hutch. (14/16)
We think these new approaches will enable mucosal immunologists to answer questions about the mechanisms promoting induction and maintenance of B cell responses in the gut, and likely other barrier tissues colonized by commensal microbes (and not just bacteria). (15/16)
What governs these distinct isotypes responses, and more broadly, the classes/nature of antigens targeted by distinct antibody isotypes remain open questions. (12/16)
Inspired by elegant studies mapping BCR affinity maturation in Peyer’s patches by @CarlaTheNove/@victora_lab and Fred Alt’s lab, we identified that SFB3340-specific germinal center B cells acquire affinity enhancing somatic mutations under homeostatic conditions. (13/16)
