I’ve always wished that I could run JAX programs on my Apple GPU, and (naturally) I have more opinions than time, so I used Opus 5.5 to build a custom backend for recent JAX versions. I’m sure there are many rough edges, but it kind of works! github.com/dfm/jax-graft

Pretty sure if I had discovered the rationalists and effective altruists in my twenties (30s, even), I’d have been all in. And probably more successful. Then again, I’m oppositional by default.

Why do we have milk products in whole, half, 2%, nonfat? Where are the 200% fat added products?

You could work on curing cancer. Advancing society. Enhancing creativity. Or enabling everyone to gamble on sports from their phones.

Pretty sure an ad isn’t supposed to influence the Supreme Court, so there’s no reason to retaliate there. Dumb.

“The time has come,” said Dr. Dimitri Moisevitch to his old friend Heywood Floyd, “to talk of many things. Of shoes and spaceships and sealing wax, but mostly of monoliths and malfunctioning computers.”

Saw 11,000 Strings last night. It was a one of a kind experience. Some thoughts: Help I’m stuck in a Shepard tone and I can’t get out! The Alt-Right of Spring Flight of the Bumblebeetlejuice Piano Concerto in F-U

How I hit $200M in ARR in just three months: Month3_MRR_No_Annual_Contract x 12. I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with reporting it this way.

1883. In the waning light of spring, an event unfolded that would set the world toward its doom. It was not the arrival of a monstrous deity or the utterance of an eldritch syllable; it was the iron heart beating with the blood of progress: the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge.

A plague on startups are teammates who think they're working a job vs. playing on a team. Job = tasks nominally done, tit for tat Team = performance matters, win together, lose together Many people know what their job is. But just as many don't know the game they're playing, what business they are building, how that salary gets funded, where the equity value materializes. Or more generously, they can't put their hands on the tether between what they do and the ultimate outcomes of the company. (Side note: have a lot of these people? Perhaps you over-hired or over-specialized) A disconnect between individuals and the team mission breaks teams, because it breaks incentive alignment. And comp is too blunt of instrument to address: salary, benefits, bonuses, equity: these typically fall into "I get it anyway" short term rewards and "was it really me and will I really get it?" long term rewards. You have to rely on the softer tools of culture, but culture is complicated and slow to adapt. It relies on a motivated and visible few. It's defined by the loudest (good and bad.) It has to be baked into literally everything. FWIW - shared mission does not have to be around financial performance, though it's good to be on a team that wants to win. It can be about craft or speed or good vibes or even shameless ambition (in service of customers!), but 9/10 people in the company have to be aligned to it in a sincere way for it to work out. And its FINE to want to work a job. Queue of tasks in, set of deliverables out. But it's not a great fit for the high risk / high reward (and often, high comp) game of a startup. So beware hiring people for jobs. Instead, build a team 🫶

See that @netflix has brought back a canceled series. See that it isn’t The OA. MOVE ON. That’s the only scandal there is.
