Is PLM worth it? In many ways it feels like a 'necessary evil'. But too often the implementation of it comes at huge cost and overhead. Is there a better way? There's the traditional heavyweights such as @Siemens Teamcentre, @PTC_Windchill , Arena etc. Duro is making admirable efforts towards a more simplified, streamlined approach. @openbom is blurring the lines across PDM, PLM and ERP with inventory and purchasing tracking added. indaBOM has chosen lightweight for those seeking a simpler solution. But there's no 'silver bullet', and any implementation will always be loaded with hurdles. Do you implement early and embrace, or hold off as long as possible or stick to more rudimentary tools (*cough* Excel)? Reply with your thoughts!

Test, learn, adjust. A masterclass in accelerating development through real-world learning. Early testing not only helps validate what you need, it will shine light on areas you didn't realize need work (not the case in this example, but in general!)
Not a difficult prediction! We will have this nailed for next flight.

SUPERCHARGING YOUR 3D PRINTS Don't underestimate what can be done with 3D printing. It doesn't have to be 'too weak'. Metal hardware can be embedded to provide strength where needed. Machines such as @BambulabGlobal's X1 that pause during print allow you to insert nuts inside the print- a great feature. The installation of bearings and shafts can see a fully functional prototype do impressive things. Hybrid builds with metal substructure for strength and external prints for detail can lead to dramatically heightened capacity. Or...something other than metal? Composite printers such as @Markforged allow strategic placement of aramid fibers for strength where needed. The only limit is your imagination! #3dprinting #bambulab #prusa #markforged

Critical Design Reviews Do you feel inertia against you in a CDR? There's a design detail that could be improved, but everything is already 'baked in'. People are reluctant to go back to the drawing board. The design is 'done'. It's supposedly about reviewing the design, but the design feels rigid. How bad does something need to be for change to happen? Don't leave communication and team understanding about design concepts until late in the cycle. Communicate early. Iterate early. Everyone should already know the product at CDR. There shouldn't be surprises. Review the design…before the design review. #engineering #designreview #CDR #changemanagement

Less is More. So many design documents are excessive, too wordy and provide unnecessary detail. This consumes valuable R&D time. Use your tools (e.g. CAD, BOM etc) to illustrate details. Use documentation to narrate critical design decisions, not rehash what can be found elsewhere. #prototyping #design #hardware #documentation
