Not going to lie that was an absolutely mental night! Thanks to everyone for the nice messages and to my mate Barn for making it happen. X

ALIENS
Had to end on a shameless favourite. Cameron’s mercurial guerilla war slasher still ranks as one of my all time great sequels. Incredible practical FX, peak Sigourney & a sound design to die for make this a timeless classic. GAME OVER MAN!

THE HOLE
Passable teenage survival thriller This hasn’t aged brilliantly and has a VERY early 00s cheap feel to it, only made worse by a young Laurence Fox playing his obnoxious self as a nauseatingly smug public school boy. Average stuff.

THE BEYOND
Fulci at his deranged best. Melting heads, squishy eyeballs, a devastatingly beautiful, badly dubbed lead actress; all vibes, no sense. It also has the line “You have Carte Blanche, but you don’t have a blank cheque!” Elite!

BAD TASTE
It’s no Braindead but if more people spent time making films with love just to make their mates laugh, the world would be a better place. Joyously stupid in every way. I love this film and all of Jackson’s performances

DEVIL
Lots of people in a lift, one of them is the Devil, carnage ensues. Simple concept well executed and pretty good fun (but not as good as I remembered). It a bit like Larry Cohen directed an M. Night Shyamalan film

THE POPES EXORCIST
This is more like it! The Russell Crowe is the Vespa riding Italian(ish) demon Exorcist we all deserve. Crowe is having a blast in this incredibly silly and wildly entertaining film. Top draw, hammy fun with great scares

THE EXORCISM
To be reductive, it’s basically The Exorcist but a bit rubbish. It’s get two stars purely because Russell Crowe is somehow fantastic in it. He’s a very good actor wasted in this by-the
-numbers, derivative demon flick.

IT FOLLOWS
A super simple concept speaks to weighty themes of sexuality, isolation and loss of innocence. Detroit is a nightmarish backdrop for the inescapable dread & the wonderful synth score adds to the overwhelming sense of unease. Love this

HAGAZUSSA
A glacially paced folk horror film set in the German alps. It’s hard to enjoy as it’s deeply disturbing but it’s an impeccably crafted film about isolation and generational trauma
Also one of the most beautifully shot films I’ve ever seen

BACK COUNTRY
A fascinating study of toxic masculinity control & the power of nature told in this superbly acted two hander (there some big paws too). Brilliantly edited with fascinating use of sound in the most terrifying scenes I’ve seen this year

HOAX/BIGFOOT (2019)
I’ve made it this far without a true stinker, but this unfortunately stunk up my life. I’m a sucker for Bigfoot B-Movies but this one is just a hot mess and bored the arse off me. Nowhere near as much fun as WILLOW CREEK or ABOMINABLE

THE PEARL COMB (Short)
I’m tired today so time for a short on Disney+
An atmospheric, Cornish mermaid folk horror that was really well acted & made efficient use of its run time. It also looked grand on what must have been a small budget

EVIL DEAD 2
Up there with the most joyful and fun horror films ever made that’s still an absolute riot. Rami’s gory & hilarious classic has lost none of its charm 40 years on & Bruce Campbell give a physical comedy masterclass. Just LOVE ❤️

GHOSTBUSTERS
A soft one to watch with my boys & the first film I ever saw in the cinema. It’s not aged amazingly but still has a charm, really fun character design, peak Bill Murray & William Atherton in elite 80s shitbag form so still lots of fun

PARENTS
After a title sequence more akin to a Pink Panther movie, the was an ugliness and hopelessness to this movie that was hard to shake. Well made & Quaid is extremely creepy, but it was too bleak to enjoy and NOT (as it was marketed) a comedy

THE LOST BOYS
Pure, undiluted 80s nostalgia. A killer cast and an all-timer soundtrack turn B-movie schlock into something iconic. Tim Cappello’s oiled-up, topless sax solo still rules all! Schumacher’s finest hour, by a mile.

HOKUM
A playful & inventive Irish folk horror from Damien McCarthy that has a light touch amongst the dread. A handsome film (very Wes Anderson) & the characters are well drawn, but Scott feels miscast and it runs out of steam a bit. Creepy tho!

LAKE PLACID
A taut 78 min, B movie creature feature is still an absolute joy. Pullman, Gleason, Fonda & Platt head an A-List cast with a scene stealing Betty White & a Stan Winston creature masterclass reminding just how good we had it in the 90s

OBSESSION
Still my film of the year. A storming debut from Barker anchored by an astonishing lead performance from Navarrette. A savage, unflinching dissection of the manosphere, male entitlement & the fragility of the male ego. A modern classic

CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD
For a film that makes sense for about 10% of its runtime it’s a massive amount of fun. It doesn’t hit the imperious heights of Fulci’s Zombie 2 but it’s still a rollicking tapestry of rancid vibes, maggots & absurd splatter
