FUNSO DOHERTY: TACKLING THE AGBERO CHALLENGE REQUIRES THE COURAGE TO CONFRONT ITS POLITICAL ROOTS “To solve the agbero problem in Lagos State, you must remove APC from Lagos.” -HE Funso Doherty The debate over the persistent challenge of street-level extortion, intimidation, and the activities of touts popularly known as agberos in Lagos State has taken a political turn following a strong statement by the Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), HE Funso Doherty. His position raises a fundamental question about governance in Lagos: can the problem of agberoism be effectively addressed without confronting the political and institutional structures that critics believe allow it to persist? For many Lagos residents, concerns about street-level harassment, transport-related extortion, intimidation, and the conduct of informal transport groups remain important public issues. Addressing these concerns requires more than public declarations. It demands political will, effective law enforcement, transparent regulation, and a government prepared to protect residents and businesses from unlawful practices. Doherty's statement challenges Lagosians to examine the relationship between political power and the persistence of these problems. His argument is that meaningful reform requires a willingness to confront the structures that sustain the status quo, rather than merely treating the symptoms. The allegation that the APC-led political establishment has enabled or benefited from agberoism is a serious political claim and remains a matter for public scrutiny. Nevertheless, it highlights an important governance question: can any administration successfully dismantle a system if the political will to confront its underlying causes is absent? A credible solution must begin with clear policies, impartial enforcement of the law, accountability for public officials, and the protection of citizens from extortion and intimidation. It must also provide a lawful framework for commercial transport operations while ensuring that no individual or group operates above the law. For Lagos to make lasting progress, the conversation must move beyond political rhetoric to measurable commitments and demonstrable results. Residents deserve a transport environment where movement is safe, businesses can operate without intimidation, and public authority serves the interests of the people. Doherty's declaration therefore serves as a call for Lagosians to scrutinise the political choices before them and demand accountability from those seeking public office. The ultimate test of leadership will be its willingness and ability to confront unlawful practices, regardless of who is responsible. The challenge before Lagos is clear: end impunity, restore public confidence, and build a system in which the law applies equally to everyone. Ó TÍ YÁ! A New Lagos Is Possible. Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Lagos State. #FunsoDoherty #NDC #Lagos2027 #OTiYa #ANewLagosIsPossible

This woman here is Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi. She is the wife of Segun Showunmi @SegunShowunmi She was newly appointed by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Director of Electoral Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). You can now know the reason why Segun Showunmi is all out attacking and threatening Nigerians with treason for demanding electoral fairness and credible elections in 2027. Truly, Segun Showunmi has collected rice. What other evidence do you need? PURE CONFLICT OF INTEREST Nigerians must defend their votes by all necessary means necessarily and at whatever cost. I challenge Segun Showunmi to deny this.

When a police officer stops you for a search, Section 50(3) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 requires the officer to disclose the following: His name and the name of the police station to which he is attached; The object of the search; and The grounds or authorisation for conducting the search. Furthermore, Section 50(4) of the same Act provides that a police officer exercising the power to stop and search must be in uniform or visibly display a valid police identity card. Know your rights. The law binds both the citizen and the police.

Ogun State NDC gubernatorial candidate Dr. Bolaji Odusina responded to my questions about her plans to reduce the cost of governance and her plans for people with disabilities. Her answers were satisfactory. These are the kind of people we need in Ogun State. Ogun State is in good hands. Ogun state is OK.

My dear people of Enugu State, Yesterday’s reported one-million-man march in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah raises a fundamental question: if this government has truly performed well, why should anybody have to force the people to attend its rally? If the people are satisfied with your leadership, your achievements should speak for themselves. If your policies have improved their lives, they should be able to support you willingly. Why, then, are there allegations that hardworking Keke riders were compelled to participate against their wishes and that those who refused were threatened with a ₦10,000 fine? A rally should be an expression of people's free will, not a gathering allegedly organised through fear, pressure, or threats. No government should mistake a crowd for genuine public support. You cannot force people to demonstrate support for a government while ignoring their right to question its performance. My concern is not merely about a political rally. It is about the daily struggles of ordinary Enugu residents who wake up every morning to work hard, provide for their families, and contribute to the economy of our state. Consider our Keke operators. During the event, the governor reportedly announced a suspension of their daily levies. This raises another important question: if the government recognises that these levies are a burden, why did it take this long to respond to the suffering of the people? Why should relief come when a political rally is taking place? Why should hardworking citizens have to wait until election season before their concerns receive attention? A government should not wait until it needs the people's votes before remembering that the people are suffering. As the NDC governorship candidate, I believe Enugu deserves a different approach to governance one that puts the welfare of the people first, not the political interests of those in power. My dear people, this is the difference between governing for the people and governing for political appearances. I am presenting myself to you not because I believe Enugu belongs to one politician or one political party, but because I believe our state can do better when leadership is built around the needs of ordinary citizens. I ask you to look beyond party colours, political rallies, and campaign promises. Ask every candidate difficult questions. Examine our plans. Demand accountability. Judge us by our commitment to the people and the solutions we are prepared to implement. As we approach 2027, I call on the people of Enugu State to join me in building a state where hardworking citizens are respected, young people have opportunities, businesses can grow, and nobody is intimidated for exercising their democratic rights. We cannot continue to treat the suffering of our people as an issue to be addressed only when elections approach. Our people deserve good governance every single day. In 2027, let us choose a new direction a government that listens before people are forced to protest, acts before suffering becomes unbearable, and serves before asking for another mandate. I am Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, the NDC governorship candidate for Enugu State, and I am offering myself for the service of our people. Let us build an Enugu that works for everybody, where leadership is a responsibility and the people always come first. ENUGU BELONGS TO ALL OF US. TOGETHER, LET US BUILD THE ENUGU WE DESERVE. Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa NDC Governorship Candidate, Enugu State

Peter Obi's pledge to increase power generation & distribution from the current range of about 4,000 to 5,000 MW to 10,000MW within 4yrs when elected as President is laudable. This is because it would bring relief to SMEs, households, lower cost of production, create jobs, make power available for health care sevices and improve living standards. Vote Peter Obi for President at the polls in 2027✌️

I am in the middle of an accidental town hall meeting in Manchester in the UK. I came to a Lunch to which Peter Obi was invited. I found food I looked forward to deferred for questions on the trouble with Nigeria. Many of the questions suggest worry about the boldness of public officials in projecting rigging with results of elections of 2027 considered in the pocket. They were energized to ask for how they could own fighting rigging. The determination to do whatever will prevent election malpractice suggest we may see a civil war if power tries to muscle the will of the people this time.
