A moment in the sky captured by photographer @florianriouphotographie illustrates one of the rarest atmospheric phenomena on Earth, red sprites, giant electrical discharges that form 50 to 90 kilometers above powerful thunderstorms. Photographed over the village of Montemaggiore in Corsica on the night of September 16-17, the branching red streaks appear to hover directly above the illuminated houses, but the storms generating them were 500 to 700 kilometers away near Barcelona. Sprites are caused by powerful positive lightning strikes that trigger electrical breakdowns in the upper atmosphere, with their red color produced by excited nitrogen molecules returning to a lower energy state. They last only milliseconds, making them nearly impossible to see with the naked eye.
