𝑰𝑵𝑫𝑼𝑳𝑮𝑬 : @notaherooi. It should've been a good day. A brilliant one, even, by Beast's standards. Billy had come over again, made dinner while he was out, fussed over Max, and stayed the night. It 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥'𝘷𝘦 been enough. The home he'd made for himself, the life he'd built from the wreckage of everything that came before, the man sleeping peacefully in his bed. Beast had something that felt like his own, something he'd chosen rather than been handed by people with their own designs. And yet, for all he had to be grateful for, something refused to settle. Somewhere around midnight, Beast slipped out of bed without disturbing Billy, dressed in the dark, and went to settle a few matters he'd neglected for far too long. By the time he'd finished, there were loose ends tied off, debts accounted for, and a weight on his conscience that no amount of distance could shake. A couple of hours later, he let himself back inside, shoulders heavy beneath the weight of the night he'd brought home with him. Something sat heavy behind his ribs, an uncomfortable reminder that refused to be shaken loose. He'd gotten everything he'd ever wanted. A life of his own. A name that belonged to him. A future that wasn't prewritten. He'd cut himself free of the past and, in his own mind, been born anew. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘪𝘵? His gaze wandered toward the bedroom. Butcher was in there, sleeping peacefully in the bed they'd shared only hours earlier, completely unaware of where Beast had been or what he'd had to do. The sight brought a faint, involuntary smile to his face. There he was. His favorite person, the one part of this mess that didn't feel like something he'd stolen. Beast lingered by the doorway for a few moments before rubbing a tired hand over his face, trying to convince himself that was enough. He was happy. He was. He had every reason to be. Instead of returning to bed, he headed for the kitchen, opening the refrigerator and retrieving a case of beer. The first bottle disappeared with a sharp crack of the cap, the cold bitterness doing precious little to settle his stomach. He took it into the living room, sat on the sofa, and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees, staring at the dark television. One bottle became two, then three. He drank without really tasting it, each swallow an attempt to quiet the thoughts he'd spent the night outrunning...

Time flies, they tell him. Time heals all wounds. Carver feels as though an eternity has passed, and his are still wide open. Is he doing something wrong? They never bake cakes for his birthdays. Most years, they barely acknowledge the day at all. So Carver sits alone on his bed, holding his mother's lighter and a cigarette he stole from her. They won't notice it's gone. They never notice anything. Besides, the whole house reeks of smoke. The lighter becomes a candle. The cigarette becomes the candle stuck inside a chocolate cake covered in colorful sprinkles, just like the one he always admires in the bakery a few buildings down from the brothel. This year, he doesn't enjoy pretending. Some birthdays are easier than others. No one has ever explained much of anything to him. Everything he knows, he's learned despite his parents, never because of them. Sometimes he wonders if they keep him in the dark on purpose, or if they simply know so little about the world that they have nothing to teach. The second possibility doesn't seem impossible. Their marriage barely functions. Whenever they fail to understand something, they destroy it. Maybe that's why Carver wakes up with new bruises so often. Just another misunderstanding. His parents never talk to him unless they need something. He's decoration. A houseplant. Something that needs the occasional drop of water so it doesn't die, not because they'd mourn it, but because dead plants make a house look neglected. They never wanted to send him to school. But teaching him themselves would have meant spending time with him, and that was an even worse alternative. School teaches him plenty. Mostly that children avoid the ones who never smile. He doesn't mind. He's used to being alone. No one there beats him until he can't stand. That counts for something. After school, he walks home as slowly as possible. He stretches minutes into hours, wishing they would somehow become days. Maybe if he takes long enough, his parents will be gone before he reaches the front door. Maybe they'll disappear. Maybe they'll die. It never happens. Not after hundreds of wishes whispered to every star in the sky. The stars are too far away. Too distant to hear him. “Where do you go after school?” His father's voice is sharp, his expression severe. It doesn't frighten Carver anymore. There was a time when his father's hand had been bigger than his face, when every raised voice sent him trembling. Now he's more afraid of mirrors. Every year, his reflection looks a little more like the man standing in front of him. Some days, peeling his own skin away sounds like the only way to stop the resemblance. “Like you care,” he mutters, staring at the floor. A fist tangles itself in his hair and jerks his head upward. The punch lands before he can brace for it. Carver looks into his father's eyes. Into the face of the man he hates. And with every passing moment, he hates himself a little more for sharing it. “Look at me when you answer.” So he does. He stares until his eyes burn. No tears come. “I said... like you care.” This time, he speaks clearly. The second punch hurts more than the first. It isn't necessary. None of them ever are. For a moment, he considers running away. But he has nowhere to go. No money. No plan. He refuses to become another burden drifting through the world. Instead, he's sent to his room like he's still ten years old. Later, when the house falls quiet, he slips into the bathroom. He hates the mirror. He hates how faithfully it reflects his father's features in his own face. He hates his eyes for seeing too much. He hates the world for letting him exist. He hates being invisible until they need someone to blame. He hates being too young to matter. When he turns sixteen, he'll leave. He doesn't care where. Under a bridge. Behind the brothel. Anywhere but here.

He clings to that promise until the day he comes home after wandering the streets for hours, maybe longer. His father barely looks at him. “Your mother gave birth.” The words are flat, almost bored. “You have a brother.” Carver glances toward the bedroom. For a moment, he almost turns around and walks back out the front door, leaving the baby behind in the arms of the very people who ruined him. He doesn't. He knows how selfish that would be. Or at least that's what every adult has always told him. Choose the right path. Do the right thing. How was he supposed to do either when the map he'd been handed was designed to lead him astray? He can't even love someone who shares his blood. Maybe that makes him just like his parents. Or maybe they had loved him once. When he was small enough to hold. Maybe he was the one who ruined it by growing into someone they couldn't stand. Maybe being alive was his first mistake. Maybe he'd stolen too much space just by existing. “He'll sleep in your room.” His father's words stop him where he stands. Whether Carver agrees doesn't matter. It never has. If the baby keeps him awake all night, that's his problem. He knows the rules by now. He wishes he were back outside. Anywhere. Everywhere. Someplace where none of them exist. He wishes the ground would open beneath his feet and swallow him whole. He doesn't ask what the baby's name is. He tells himself he doesn't care. He pretends that seeing his mother cradle the child in her arms doesn't tear open the wound in his chest that had only just begun to scar. That day, he learns pain has no limits. She looks at the baby with tenderness. With pride. With a love Carver can't remember ever receiving. He remains in the doorway, suddenly feeling like an old possession someone forgot to throw away after buying a newer one. The emptiness inside him curdles. Love never arrives. Only hatred does. It roots itself so deeply that he's convinced he was born carrying it. He hates his little brother more than he's ever hated himself. Then his mother looks up. The softness leaves her face the moment her eyes meet his. “His name is Theodore.” Violence surges through Carver so suddenly that he has to clench his fists to keep them still. “Come say hello to your brother.” She beckons him, and he would've refused if he didn't feel the shadow of his father behind him. Carver walks slowly to the edge of the bed, staring at this replacement, this living merchandise only here to fulfill his parents’ ego. He leans closer, face blank, one hand cupping the small cheek of his little brother. After a kiss on his forehead, he mouths something that will stay between them for the rest of time. “You shouldn't have been born. I hate you.”

Three in the morning, and Beast was sleeping, sprawled behind @notaherooi with both arms wrapped securely around him in an inescapable spooning embrace. One heavy forearm rested across Butcher’s middle while the other had somehow migrated beneath the pillow, leaving Beast pressed comfortably against his back. His breathing had settled into a slow, steady rhythm, right up until he shifted in his sleep and dragged himself several inches closer. His nose ended up dangerously close to Butcher’s ear. There was a brief, peaceful silence. Beast then inhaled deeply. His chest expanded against Butcher’s back before unleashing an enormous, rumbling 𝙎𝙉𝙊𝙍𝙀 directly beside his ear.
