Very interesting!
I had trouble fully unpacking what this paper actually was measuring, what its findings were, and what the implications are for human/primate consiousness so i had Claude read through the paper and this thread, compose a script, and create an explainer video

By that logic abolish novels, guitars, espresso, and everything beyond state-issued nutrient paste. You are reinventing poverty as a moral philosophy.

...so maybe the AGI question everyone's asking is the wrong one. New Neuropixels work shows the brain flips ~15x per second between conscious and suppressed content, even when stimulus and percept stay constant. Consciousness looks less like a place and more like an arbitration process. My take: millions of years of evolution stacked dozens of substrates that talk to each other over slow, noisy, chemical "protocols". Consciousness is the filter our brain needs to reconcile all that crosstalk and stay sane. Which means a cleanly engineered system, with 1 substrate and precise protocol, may never need that layer at all. AGI without consciousness isn't a contradiction, might be the default. (It also explains why if this filter doesn't work properly, people can go off the rails)

Adding speaker recognition today. Fixing audio bugs (related to, of course, Bluetooth)

Sidekick’s current feature set: Automatic conversation recording • Starts recording when speech is detected, once listening is enabled. • Can also start from sustained microphone-and-output activity in another app—useful for calls where you haven’t spoken yet. • Captures microphone and computer audio, subject to permissions. • Keeps configurable microphone pre-roll so the opening words aren’t lost. • Uses speech detection and a configurable silence countdown to stop automatically. • Supports manual recording, stopping, pausing, and resuming. • Lets you select a microphone and adjust speech sensitivity and timing. • Excludes Right Command dictation from triggering recordings (this is my VoiceInk dictation shortcut). • Shows listening, paused, recording, and countdown states in the menu bar. • Remembers enabled services and the last paused/listening mode across launches. Local transcription and audio playback • Transcribes recordings locally using Parakeet V3. • Produces timestamped transcript segments. • Combines microphone and computer audio into aligned playback. • Provides play/pause, seeking, and elapsed/duration controls. • Preserves original recording tracks. • Queues completed recordings for processing and retries failed transcription. • Stores new recordings in a speech-sized audio format. • Includes a command-line utility to compact older recordings while retaining local backups. Email import • Drag an Outlook email into the app. • Import saved .eml files through the File menu or toolbar. • Drop saved emails onto Sidekick’s Dock or Finder icon, including to launch it. • Preserves the original email, subject, sender, recipients, date, and body. • Extracts tasks automatically from the message. • Opens the original email from its capture details. • Warns about exact duplicate imports, with Show existing, Import anyway, and Cancel choices. Slack import • Imports a message from its Slack permalink. • Optionally includes the conversation thread. • Prefills the import field when the clipboard contains a valid Slack message link. • Preserves message text, authors, timestamps, and the original link. • Resolves author names and mentions using the connected Slack account. • Extracts commitments and follow-ups automatically. • Opens the original conversation in Slack. • Detects exact duplicates while allowing changed messages or threads with new replies. • Stores the Slack credential in the Mac’s Keychain. Screen capture and OCR • Opens a region selector with Option+Tab. • Lets you move and resize the selected region. • Supports one screenshot or multiple screenshots within one capture. • Keeps the selection in place while you manually scroll and capture more. • Accepts optional typed or dictated context notes. • Recognizes screen text locally. • Preserves each original screenshot and its individual OCR text. • Lets you edit capture notes later. • Provides a full-size screenshot viewer with scrolling and pinch-to-zoom. AI task extraction and prioritization • Uses Claude to find tasks in transcripts, screenshots, emails, and Slack messages. • Can extract multiple tasks from one source. • Separates My actions from Waiting on others. • Flags uncertain responsibility for clarification. • Reconciles equivalent commitments and attaches supporting quotations. • Suggests deadlines and explains why a task deserves attention. • Processes new or changed material incrementally. • Caches unchanged input to avoid unnecessary processing. • Provides an explicit Review priorities action for reviewing the entire backlog. • Animates task reordering after a full review, respecting Reduce Motion. • Shows processing stages, source/chunk information, counts, errors, and elapsed time. Task management and evidence • Searches task titles, assignees, and explanations. • Lets you edit task wording, responsibility, assignee, deadline, and an associated link. • Saves task edits automatically. • Supports completing, reopening, pinning, snoozing, restoring, and dismissing tasks. • Preserves your wording and completed status through subsequent AI reviews. • Links tasks back to their original capture and quoted evidence. • Links captures to their associated tasks, including completed tasks. • Lets you supply your name and identify the main unlabelled recording speaker as yourself. • Keeps tasks and corrections when their original source is deleted. Capture library, storage, and synchronization • Browses imported messages, screenshots, recordings, transcripts, and notes. • Shows processing status and the number of identified actions per capture. • Sorts captures by capture/import arrival time while retaining original message dates. • Supports deletion through the trash button, context menu, or Delete key. • Stores the workspace locally. • Offers optional private iCloud synchronization between Macs. • Automatically hands off the single active writer between Macs. • Keeps other Macs available for read-only browsing and playback. • Shows synchronization status and upload progress. • Preserves recovery copies when cloud changes conflict with unsent local work. Mac integration, appearance, and diagnostics • Native SwiftUI/AppKit interface for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. • Seven themes: Liquid Glass, Amber Phosphor, Green Phosphor, Borland, Amiga Workbench, C64, and WarGames. • System appearance and typography in Liquid Glass; compact monospaced typography in custom themes. • Theme-specific retro mouse pointers. • Immediate theme switching without losing the open task or editor state. • Semantic status colors, with HDR highlights on supported displays. • A centralized permissions pane with access checks and macOS Settings shortcuts. • Service controls and status for recording, capture, transcription, and intelligence. • Color-coded, selectable logs, plus shortcuts to the log file and data folder. Current boundaries: • Slack imports are on demand, rather than continuous background monitoring. • Email attachments aren’t analyzed. • Screenshot stitching was tried and deliberately removed. Multi-screenshot capture preserves separate screenshots and their individual OCR text. • Speaker identity is supplied context rather than voice recognition. • Transcription and OCR run locally. Claude receives extracted text and task context, not raw audio or screenshots.

Surprised by this comment, Paul! You're a moonshot optimist (as am I). Too late would imply all land has been grabbed (unlikely). Or too late because EU regulations make it impossible? Or no training data left that is accessible to newcomers? Or do you think there's no room in the capital markets for more than two AI giants?

Using nuclear power to make hydrogen, then turning that hydrogen into synthetic gasoline so it can be burned at about 20% efficiency, is not pragmatism. It's a thermodynamic prank.

I made this app entirely for myself, with zero intention of releasing it. It's the 6th or so revision in as many months. This screenshot shows how an "indie app" page would look like, just to give a feel for its features.

Moats disappearing at an alarming rate
people are starting to realize. there *are* no moats left. the only true moat in existence was intelligence, and now that's out of the equation.
