We should be cautious about tech like Woebot, an AI chatbot app using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to help people manage their mental health. Digital wellness apps aren't bound by US federal privacy laws & have shared data with 3rd parties like Facebook/Meta. 4/6

#CyberpunkisNow This thread presents various realities & occurrences related to people using AI chatbots. The AI chatbots involved are mostly Replika or ChatGPT. Released in 2017 & 2022, so much has risen from these technologies in just six years. Sources in posts 5 & 6. 1/6

Given all this, I believe it's difficult to place an upper limit on what these two technologies (also, similar tech in the future) may ultimately be capable of, both in their performance as technologies, & their possible impact on people, for good or ill (probably ill). III/III

Both technologies impact on society thus far, if judged by how they've effected people's lives alone, have been so widely varied, as to be dangerously unpredictable. On top of this, a wide array of usecases & new technologies that leverage both, have come into existence. II/III

What I hoped to demonstrate via this thread: We have two technologies that have been publicly released for 6 years (Replika) & 2 years (ChatGPT). In those relatively short periods of time, both have had a considerable, wide reaching impact on society & technology. I/III

I bet data farms deploying legions of chatbots designed to engage people in online communication, specifically to harvest data from them, will be a thing. "We don't have data point X from online population Y." "Deploy 100,000 bots using deepfakes package E, targeting psychological types 1 thru 44."

Also, since around 2014, Russia's government has produced/implemented Elbrus chips, that have x86/x64 compatibility for applications like military computers. I think the chips native architecture (Elbrus 2000) may be SPARC based, but I could be wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbrus…

Autonomous AI agents are already here. I used one experimental model, AutoGPT, and let it analyze the market for simulations, setting its own goals. Right now, the AI is prone to distraction & confusion, but you can see how it might soon work (the system is only a week old).

This is quite the paper! It gave 25 AI agents motivations & memory, and put them in a simulated town. Not only did they engage in complex behavior (including throwing a Valentine’s Day party) but the actions were rated more human than humans roleplaying. arxiv.org/pdf/2304.03442.pdf

Whoa.. still not convinced of AI Agents? This might change your mind... I pretended to be a fake shoe company and gave AutoGPT a simple objective: - Do market research for waterproof shoes - Get the top 5 competitors and give me a report of their pros & cons Here's how it went:

Last month, the UK government began collecting the nation's smart meter data, which it can keep for 7 years: gov.uk/government/publicatio… It's difficult to believe a government that uses electrical power frequencies for surveillance (see post below) won't do the same with this data.

This is the data the UK government is collecting via all of the nation's smart meters (see the post above). By analyzing "energy consumption" alone, the government could deduce when you're home, your behaviors, the technologies present in your home (and when you use them), etc.

When films depicting dystopias which could predict our future are discussed, Gattaca isn't in the conversation nearly enough. The technologies, along with the circumstances needed for similar, real world discrimination by governments & companies based on our DNA, already exist.
