Onlookers cheered this evening at the Calgary Stampede after a Skyride staffer climbed a support pole to lower a child’s restraining bar. The nerve-wracking moment ended without incident. @cmcalgary @calgarystampede #yyc
The Calgary Herald is reporting that last night’s Smuggler's Inn restaurant fire was contained to the roof. There’s lots of water damage, but this local staple will live to see another day. calgaryherald.com/news/local… via @calgaryherald
It was sad to watch flames engulf Frank’s restaurant in Smuggler’s Inn this evening at 6920 Macleod Trail SW. In December 2021 fire destroyed the Ginger Beef Bistro House not far away.
Ward 11 Coun. Kourtney Penner (formerly Branagan) saw my website stats and knew I would be interested in hers. Her campaign website experienced exactly the same hike in traffic on election day as mine with about 4,000 unique visits. It ain't over 'til it's over. @paulisci
Here’s one reason polls are sometimes way off. My Ward 11 campaign website received a major boost in traffic on election day, suggesting many voters didn’t make up their minds until the last minute. The only poll that can capture that is the voting booth. @paulisci
I did not win the race to be the next councillor for Ward 11, so I went looking for victories elsewhere. As it turns out, I just passed Steven Phan in Ward 12 to claim the fleeting title for having the most watched Common Sense Calgary video in the entire series. I’ll take it!
Geoffrey Vanderburg, Ward 11 Candidate for Calgary Council #yyc #yyccc xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1yoKMWvwy…
I just received a robocall from Ward 11 council candidate @KourtBranagan. If I'm not mistaken, at the end of her call she said, "I choose YOU to be part of the solution." The congenial connection between candidates in Ward 11 has been rewarding, but that surprised even me!
My answers to the Calgary Herald's candidate questionnaire focus on the voter always being right: calgaryherald.com/news/local…
This Globe and Mail feature is visually impressive, but the stats are sobering. Fortunately, the City of Calgary's solutions are in the works, including office conversions, enhancements to public spaces, encouraging private investment and creating a dedicated downtown team.
Calgary had the highest rate of downtown office vacancies in Canada even before the pandemic, owing to tanking oil prices that in turn hollowed out towers in the city's core.
Here’s an interactive look at how that happened.

Calgary's void: How office towers emptied in a once bustling downtown
Thirty per cent of Calgary’s downtown office space sits empty, draining the life out of the city.
A Northwest Research Group poll conducted Oct. 7-9, 2021 suggests I'm running third out of the eight candidates for city council in Ward 11. I believe the voter is always right, but that doesn't mean I won't try to change people's minds and win over the 29% of undecided voters!
This is what makes municipal politics awesome and unique. In summary, @hmcrae says city council needs to have robust conversations about important issues. They should not be informed by ideology. They should be informed by facts. And we need to listen to other perspectives.
Replying to @MarleyGillies
@MarleyGillies joined me for a morning at the doors this weekend. We had hoped to do some Facebook live hits, but Mother Nature had other plans, so we had to retreat. But here is a little taste of what we were up to. Hope we can reconvene later this week! #yyc #yycvotes #ward7
This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful the campaign for city councillor in Ward 11 has been constructive, positive and rewarding. Candidates have focused on their vision for Calgary instead of attacking others. Criticism has been about policies, not people. This bodes well.
Thanks to the planmyvote.ca website, a joint project between the Calgary Public Library and Elections Calgary, it was easy to know exactly where to go today to vote in the advance polls, which run from Oct. 4-10. The municipal election is Oct. 18.
As we close the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, let’s try to identify tomorrow’s apologies today. Will future generations have to apologize for inadequate drinking water, missing and murdered women or systemic racism? It’s not too late to make things right.
Calgary’s downtown vacancy rate is high, but Western Investor is reporting that Calgary has more downtown office space fully leased than Vancouver and more downtown offices leased than in all other major Western Canadian cities combined.

It’s ironic that some of the municipal election candidates that value fiscal responsibility are spending tens of thousands of dollars on decorated vehicles, bus benches and dozens of 4x8 signs on public property. I guess the fiscal responsibility starts after the election.

Dawid Pawlowski, a CHP candidate in Calgary Centre in the federal election, is now also a candidate for councillor in Ward 11 in the municipal election. I promised myself I would only criticize platforms and not people in this race, but keeping this commitment won't be easy.
