Knowing anything about anything alienates you from leftists. The average leftist's worldview is that ontologically evil businessmen are destroying the world because they're too greedy and that we should fix it by passing the no more greed act.
knowing economics alienates you from left wing friend groups it’s crazy. i explain how a thing works in america and it’s always “no but it shouldn’t be that way” like ok sure there’s drawbacks i agree. and then you ask what the solution is and they just say “not do that”

One of capitalism’s greatest ideological victories is convincing communists that the problem is who owns capital rather than the social relation of capital itself. A cooperative still produces commodities, remains subject to the law of value, and competes on the market.

“Man's dearest possession is life. It is given to him but once, and he must live it so [...] that, dying, he might say: all my life, all my strength were given to the finest cause in all the world — the fight for the liberation of Mankind.” — Nikolai Ostrovsky.

Communism has absolutely nothing to do with improving the condition of the human race or of the working class in general, and genuinely believing it is, is a result of being trapped in enlightenment era liberal thinking. In the German Ideology, Marx and Engels outline the materialist conception of history, in which they demonstrate the decisive nature of material production in the life of the human species. Life is not determined by consciousness, but consciousness by life. Through this they prove the division of society into antagonistic classes, and sketch an outline of historical forms, each with its own way of organizing and socially dividing labor. Despite being only a relatively small portion of the book, it lays out Marxism nearly in its entirety: communism does not arise from a priori principles, but came into being naturally with the emergence of proletarians as a class, existing as the real movement to abolish the present state of things, or, as the theoretical expression of the conditions necessary to liberate the proletarian class. The aim of this movement is the destruction of the old society, and consequently the destruction of class society, including the self abolition of the proletarian class. Although the communists do not project their preconceived beliefs onto the world, we can know the content of the communist revolution and its aims, simply by further applying the analysis that led us to understand societal divisions in the first place,

Marxism lifted 800 million people out of poverty in 40 years. Thats 75% of poverty reduction during that same 40 years and 53% of poverty reduction since 1820. Remind me, how many people have been elevated from poverty by anarchist societies?

being a feminist and supporting pornography and prostitution is simply absurd. how can you defend an industry that orchestrates the rape of women (generally poor and racialized) ? how can you defend the idea that men can buy women ?

Italy was completely paralized by one of the greatest demonstrations and coordinated strikes europe has ever seen. Reformist trade unions tried to split the general strike by having another demonstration Friday, but this has not hindered the protest!

It’s wild how the foundation of AI was arguably built by Soviet scientists and mathematicians who largely went uncredited.

Galushkin wrote about backpropagation 12 years before Hinton did, researchers continually refer to the “Wasserstein metric” in literature despite it originating from work partially written by Kantorovich, etc.

I imagine this happens everywhere (i.e. “the research was published to a Soviet journal and, therefore, inaccessible”) but something as foundational as backpropagation being attributed to a group of researchers who arguably only popularised existing work (uncredited) is wild
