It was a Special Pencil Case. There were pencils marked 'HB' for Helping Bear, 'BB' for Brave Bear and a ruler for ruling lines for the words to walk on. But Eeyore was saying, 'This writing business. Pencils and what-not. Over-rated, if you ask me.' ~A.A.Milne #WorldTeachersDay

Sadly there was a climate & nature shaped hole at the heart of Burnham’s speech. Just the same old words on a “pragmatic” approach to North Sea drilling. There’s nothing pragmatic about pouring fuel on a scorching earth - he should rule out #Rosebank & Jackdaw now @fossilfreeLDN

It's not pensions you can't afford. It's not immigrants. It's not Disabled People. Or University educations. Or Healthcare. Or Housing. It's billionaires you can't afford, they are stealing all of this and much more.

Richest 1% of Britons owns more wealth than the bottom 70% of the population combined. 50 families hold more wealth than the poorest half of the population. Concentration of wealth has not provided the necessary economic stimulus. Need redistribution. leftfootforward.org/2026/09/…

Andy Burnham has said the new water bill will “start a 10-year journey to a very different water system". He has an open goal with Thames Water. The company is insolvent. The legislation already exists to effect the transition to public ownership. Don't kick the can down the road - start now. vist.ly/5kfg7

Golden Wednesday. That was quite an unexpected end to my morning walk. After going up Glastonbury Tor in torrential rain, I was on my way home and the sky cleared in seconds!

That moonlight isn't real. Every drop of it is oil paint... It's called A Moonlit Lane, and it was painted by John Atkinson Grimshaw in 1874. A full moon hangs behind bare, tangled branches, the road below still wet from the rain, and every puddle and wall and dark hedge holds a little of that cold silver light. You can almost feel the chill in the air and hear the silence of the street... The man who painted it was born in a cramped terraced house in Leeds, worked as a clerk for the railway, and taught himself almost everything he knew. At twenty-four, to his parents' horror, he quit his job to paint. He even borrowed from photography, projecting scenes onto his canvas with lenses, and some of his contemporaries sneered that the results showed no marks of handling or brushwork, as if that were a flaw rather than an artistic miracle... But the painter who mattered most saw it differently: James McNeill Whistler, the man famous for his own night paintings, came to visit him and admitted: "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures."

Glastonbury at sunset If you liked this morning’s shot, I think you’ll like this one even more. St John the Baptist’s tower catching a subtle shade of rose from the setting sun, with Glastonbury Tor rising behind it against a pink and lilac sky. The sky turned to fire not long after this. I hope you like it. #GlastonburyTor #StJohnsGlastonbury #Glastonbury #Sunset #Somerset #Avalon

Exceptionally heavy El Niño rains have triggered millions of dormant seeds beneath the soil, transforming vast stretches of one of the world’s driest regions into a spectacular carpet of flowers. 🌸🌸🌸 The Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, has been dramatically transformed following heavy rainfall in northern Chile. Areas that are typically barren and parched are now covered in vibrant violet and white blossoms, a rare natural phenomenon known as the “flowering desert.”🏵️🏵️🏵️

Zoom in on this image. It's not a photograph. It's called Moonrise, painted in oil in 1884 by Polish artist Stanisław Masłowski, and it hangs in the National Museum in Kraków. It shows almost nothing: a wide, dark sky, a still stretch of water, a low bank of sand, a few bare trees. And just above the horizon, the golden moon, half hidden behind a streak of grey cloud, laying a single ribbon of gold light down across the water toward you. What makes it extraordinary is that it depicts one of the hardest things a painter can attempt: near-darkness. Most of the canvas is dim, and dim light has almost no color and almost no contrast to work with, one wrong value and the whole thing goes muddy or flat. Masłowski handled that faint light so precisely that the scene glows exactly the way a real night does. He was only about thirty when he painted it.
