We’re hiring 3–4 high-agency people to work on real political economy problems in India and build something genuinely new. No coasting. No performative work. Strong grasp of current affairs is *non-negotiable*. Tech fluency required. 7–15 yrs of exp. Competitive pay. Link in bio

Excellent and emotive piece by @guptar (really one of my favourites writing on India) on the lack of decent employment opportunities in the country.

“However, despite youth unemployment being a central part of our discourse, I increasingly feel that our approach to addressing unemployment is fundamentally incorrect.” @guptar rgupta.substack.com/p/we-are…

I have had similar discussions where we wondered how many jobs and livelihoods would be lost if the systems actually became efficient.

A depressing fact about work in India is that fragmentation and low productivity are not problems but the way our country absorbs its labour.

Not sure whether the ongoing protests by political parties, students’ organisations and civil societies will culminate in the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar but the impact is already seen in the functioning of the poll body. Changes in SSR 2027: 1. Soft copy of electoral rolls in readable format to political parties. 2. Additions, depletions and modifications lists will also be shared with political parties. 3. Soft copy of electoral rolls in readable format to be shared with contesting candidates. 4. Weekly list of claims and objections will be shared with political parties. Though more needs to be reformed in ECI, this is a first step towards greater transparency in the making of electoral rolls.

First harass people to take out the literal two extra kilos of luggage in check-in luggage even when they have no cabin luggage. Then run around during boarding coaxing people to check-in their cabin bags. Totally daft behaviour @airindia

“Between 2011-12 and 2025 the number of graduates aged 22 to 29 more than doubled, from about 2.4 crore to 5.5 crore. Jobs that need a degree did not keep pace. Graduate unemployment rose from 19% to 33% by 2017-18¹ and has since fallen to 21%, because more graduates took jobs below their qualification. Of every 100 graduates working or looking for work, those in jobs that do not need a degree rose from 32 in 2017-18 to 46 in 2025; those in jobs that need one stayed at about 33.” This piece by @guptar Fellow of the @AnantaAspen is very useful to ponder over for policy makers interested in youth employment. rgupta.substack.com/p/why-is…

An analysis of graduate employment in 31 states in India: Graduate unemployment is lower in states where private enterprise is deeper and larger, spread more widely across the state, and anchored in more than one sector. rgupta.substack.com/p/why-is…

Yes because all languages know youre supposed to get eight hours of sleep at night.
You may have noticed that the word for ‘night’ in many languages appears to be that language’s word for ‘eight’ with an ‘N' in front of it. English: N + eight = Night German: N + acht = Nacht French: N + huit = Nuit Spanish: N + ocho = Noche Italian: N + otto = Notte Portuguese: N + oito = Noite ⬇️

Just saw a billboard for a diamond company with the tagline "love so real that only a real diamond will do". Infuriating how these companies insert themselves into personal relationships and make them transactional to sell their useless nonsense. As if a poor person cannot love

By income rank, it takes very little to look well off in India. If you are earning Rs 25,000 a month, you are part of the top 10%. This modest income may sound rich on paper, but for India's middle class, this high-rank status clashes with today's high-inflation reality. thecore.in/business/who-is-m… @guptar explains why today's middle class is feeling squeezed and what policymakers can do about it.

More often than not what ails India is its self-serving elite. Real lack of nation-building ethos
Why has India failed to industrialize? Ha-Joon Chang argues that it’s because India’s business and financial elites oppose industrialization — and that it won’t happen unless their power is curbed.
