The web deserves to be more fun, so I put together a little side project to play my part. Time to transport yourself back to the 90s. Introducing:

won't stop repeating this - the thing that makes products feel good to use is trying really hard, not some technology
How is this website so fast?
I take a look behind McMaster-Carr and detail all the techniques they are using to make it fast.
They are doing it all — prefetching HTML, inlined CSS, fixed images, pushstate — and all on a stack with 15 year old tech.

Matt: really?! Another public act of stupidity?? That’ll save my business?!?
Nathan for you:
Maybe I'm supposed to get mad at this, but instead I just get sad. Mullenweg clearly sees it as a failure to create much more value in the world than what you capture, and maybe that's the root of our differences. I see that as a proud achievement. ma.tt/2024/10/on-dhh/
This is frustratingly true and has resulted in many awful web experiences
Replying to @aboodman
The harsh reality is that most developers are not performance experts. Leaving performance (and accessibility, etc) as an exercise to the reader has objectively not gone well.

What the hell does this even mean

I really like this article and think about it a lot as a software developer. Writing great software is not enough—you must also communicate with customers/stakeholders, align with business goals, and market solutions. I wrote more about that here:

The code is your enemy.
You love to code. You go to it because you understand it. It’s safe. The compiler always does what you tell it to do (even if React doesn’t).
That’s why it’s the enemy. It’s not what you should be doing.

Four months later and officially starting my paternity leave today. But that also means that his nap times are a great opportunity for me to tinker, write, and code without the burden of work. Kinda looking forward to that aspect of it (as well as the kiddo time)!
And if you want to follow along with the next thing I'll be tinkering, coding, and writing about, I'm trying something with a newsletter:

Entering this stage of life and happy to see the timeline is also going through it with me!

Have an idea for a new website that I kinda want to build with @astrodotbuild and deploy with @SST_dev. This might be good timing!
