Awesome pod! Great to see @jadtnaous @grepr_ai with @martin_casado diving deep as AI generates more telemetry than we’ve ever seen And great answer @martin_casado on why AI won’t replace VCs or at least the ones who do the work - people and relationships will matter even more as world becomes more transactional but I hope the other way around and that it frees up to spend more time on the founder and people side And yes I’m pumped about what’s ahead for @grepr_ai
Engineering leaders told Grepr founder and CEO Jad Naous they spend 5 to 20% of their infrastructure budget on observability, and it's buying less and less reliability. Jad, a former a16z partner, joins a16z's Martin Casado to discuss whether AI can run production systems as well as it writes code. Grepr sits in a company's log stream, can scan a petabyte of logs a day, cuts observability costs by about 90%, and is building AI agents that use those signals to troubleshoot production issues. How AI is changing engineering at Jad's 10-person company: - A data lake feature that once took one engineer about six months took Jad 10 days - The gap between okay and great engineers on his team "just multiplied 10X" - He runs 3-4 agent sessions at once, with a "tech lead" agent reviewing every PR Why running live systems is a harder problem for AI: - Jad: AI can almost tune databases, but can't yet keep servers running on its own - Martin: every bit of code doubles the ways a program can behave, which is why humans still own systems - The real world is messier than AI's training data, self-driving took 20 years and $170B 0:55 From Stanford to a16z to Grepr 7:00 Why observability spend stopped paying off 11:00 From autocomplete to AI that trains engineers 13:10 Why AI widens the engineer skill gap 14:55 Syntax vs semantics 18:00 Inside Jad's AI workflow 22:55 Six months of work in 10 days 24:50 Can AI reason about how systems really run? 30:10 Why AI SRE tools start in the wrong place 32:30 Can AI run a distributed cluster yet? 37:35 Why engineers buy extra capacity over predicting 39:15 How AI could trace failures in production 43:45 Why AI for ops is harder than for code 49:55 Can AI do a VC's job? 52:05 Why self-driving took 20 years and $170B 57:05 Customers skipped the AI pitch for the 90% savings YouTube: youtu.be/blkIGLlZePg @jadtnaous @grepr_ai @martin_casado

Will Spencer on rolling out @grepr_ai at Custom Ink: they spent more time enjoying tweaking things than they did getting it into production. Every week a tool spends in evaluation is another week you're paying to store noise.

Every new log source is another parser to write. And a renamed field can break your detections with no error to warn you. Grepr AI maps new sources to OCSF and fixes the mapping when things change. Raw data untouched. Demo: grepr.ai/blog/grepr-ai-maps-…

Many people have worked on translation query engines. Not many people have turned them into products. @grepr_ai has built a translation layer that transforms from observability query languages to data lake SQL queries and to generated code that run fast in stream. grepr.ai/blog/one-query-four…

What will it really take to scale enterprise AI? More than technology. It takes infrastructure, security, visibility & the right expertise. A few more of the many companies joining us at the AI Networking Summit NYC include @Keysight, @Carahsoft, @Grepr_ai, @MarvellTech, @DigitalRealty & @CrowdStrike. 👉 Join us Oct. 28–29: hubs.li/Q04zVRvd0

We ran Grepr AI, our anomaly detection agent, on our own systems for a month. It caught bugs before they hit customers, mostly in dev, and across ~17K investigations it only pinged us for the real issues. Write-up by our lead engineer Utkarsh Vashishtha: grepr.ai/blog/30-days-on-cal…

We showed Custom Ink an 85 to 90% reduction at #KubeCon. Months later they got to production and measured 85 to 90%. The gap between the demo number and the production number is where most observability vendors lose people.

In two days: 7-Eleven's former CTO Barry Carter joins Grepr CEO @jadtnaous for a live fireside chat on the ROI of reliability. They'll cover what reliability is worth, how observability earns its budget, and how to price the risk. watch.getcontrast.io/registe…

Typical Scenario: A $1M #observability bill, down to about $250K. A 75% cut. Most of what you pay to ingest is repetitive noise. Grepr only sends compressed signal to your observability platform and keeps the raw data queryable in S3. Run your own numbers: grepr.ai/roi-calculator

Will Spencer @customink goes through a lot of vendor pitches. He says it's rare anyone delivers exactly what they said they would. So he came into our POC skeptical. That's the customer I want, because they test the claim instead of trusting it. #reliability

New in Grepr: role-based access. Group users into teams, give them roles, and scope integrations, datasets, and pipelines by team. Org admins see everything, team leaders manage their team's setup, members stay in their lane. Quick demo:

Exclusion filters lower your #Datadog index bill, then charge you back during an incident. The logs you cut to save money are the slowest and priciest to rehydrate, right when you need them. We wrote about the hidden cost, and a better way: grepr.ai/blog/the-hidden-cos…

Drop 25% of your logs to cut costs, and if the thing you're investigating is in that 25%, you never see it. You don't even know what you missed. Will Spencer, DevOps at @customink, on why sampling was never an option.

Register: watch.getcontrast.io/registe… Barry Carter and Grepr CEO @jadtnaous on what reliability is worth to a business, why observability spend keeps growing without a clear return, and how to cut that cost without losing the data.

WEBINAR RECAP: @customink cut their #CloudWatch bill about 85% without dropping a single log. They refused to sample or drop data, and their developers never noticed the change. Their DevOps team and Grepr's CEO (@jadtnaous) break down how, in our latest webinar. Read recap and watch recording: grepr.ai/blog/custom-ink-clo…
