This Austin ICE shooting is pretty incredible. They smashed the DoorDash driver's car. They shot the driver in the back. They pull them out of the car. Tear open his shirt. Confirm he's been shot. Take him to the hospital. Remove him 4 hours later with the bullet still in him and bring him to detention center for questioning, refusing to tell his family where he is. Apparently he's still there with the bullet in him today, without pain meds, without seeing his family, without seeing counsel, and with ICE doing its own investigation into itself.
A man was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, according to the Austin Police Department, prompting protests at the scene and backlash from local officials.

The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore. Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali & Russia, isolated. And the world no longer listens to it.

.@AmbUNReform: The UN human rights system has been losing credibility for decades.
Volker Türk led it to its deathbed.

Conveniently (and cynically), the administration used § 301 to impose 10-12.5% tariffs on 99% of US trade in goods on Friday (just after the global 10-15% § 122 tariffs had to expire by statute) as @gregorycshaffer and I predicted last month in @just_security.
justsecurity.org/142153/cyni…
The finalized rates also confirm that the admin is
rewarding trade partners for signing preferential deals for the US that contain many many things besides forced labor, but that also include vague promises to pass and enforce legislation to ban imports of goods produced with forced labor.
The non-labor deal provisions were the differentiator. Countries that enacted import bans without a deal got a flat 10%, whereas those that signed a deal received 10% + exemptions, caps, and quotas.
You can find our analysis of the section 301 report on Forced Labor that is the basis for the new and cynical Trump tariffs here: justsecurity.org/142153/cyni….... They go into effect Friday at 12am: nytimes.com/2026/07/23/busin….
Our piece assessing the cynicism behind the #Section301 report is now out in @justsecurity
Replying to @gregorycshaffer
@gregorycshaffer and I show how the proposed tariff rates in USTR's forced-labor Section 301 report track whether or not a country has cut a deal with the U.S. administration, and not its policing of forced-labor imports for @just_security

BREAKING: Scott Pelley Just Made A Pretty Stunning Allegation.
According to Pelley, CBS leadership wanted a story about the killing of ICE protester Renée Good changed to better match Trump's version of events.
Pelley says he was told management wanted protesters portrayed as more violent and wanted Good described as driving toward the officer who shot her. He says the video evidence showed otherwise.
Then came the admission.
"There was a thumb on the scale for the president's version of events."
A veteran journalist with 37 years at CBS is alleging political pressure was applied to change the facts of a story.
That's a remarkable accusation.
The Trump administration is now using Section 301 to attempt to set tariffs for all countries at the President's will. The legal issues behind this new attempt to unsettle norms and consolidate power are explained here.
The Trump administration's Section 301 investigations and resulting tariffs are likely to face serious legal challenges.
In a recent piece for @just_security, @gregorycshaffer and I look at the issues those tariffs could raise, including including constitutional, statutory interpretation, and administrative law claims.
