The PM's comments that drinking alcohol in sight of the pitch should be allowed have been headline news today. We support the PM’s position and it’s actually a more nuanced discussion than X sometimes allows but - deep breath! - we'll give it a go. 🧵An old skool thread 🧵

Burnham isn’t saying “you must drink in the stands” or “every part of every stadium must allow fans to knock back 7 pints in the first half”, is he? Getting rid of the laws will allow clubs to have sensible, mature conversations with fans to explore what might work for them
Whilst I understand Andy Burnham not wanting football fans to be demonised in relation to other sections of society and I make him right, I have zero desire to have drinking in the stands. People will be in an out all the time to get a beer or have a piss, it's unnecessary.

As with anything, this is nuanced but IMO has plenty of positives. It is not: All or Nothing There are options for drinking areas, plus pint-chuckers will be in the minority & there could always be consequences. Importantly, it would create vital revenue for smaller clubs.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham is set to scrap the law that bans football fans from drinking in the stands "I don’t see how it can be fair that some supporters of one sport can be treated differently"

This is what the people in NYC wake up to every morning while you're suffering in some other state, btw.

Think this is the most excited I’ve ever been for a #ctfc signing. Real statement of intent and exactly what we needed.

Imagine waking up in the morning and thinking the best way to start your day is to listen to Nick Ferrari.
"You're telling me people in this country can't afford a 50p toothbrush?" "Yes." @NickFerrariLBC is in disbelief at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation's latest study into the cost of living.

When pay runs out before the end of the week, it's irrelevant whether the next thing you need costs 50p or £50. Before getting in an arithmetic tangle over 50p>0, pause instead on what you would do if one week you had to choose between feeding your kids or brushing their teeth.

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk
