People often ask me what is behind the rise in far right politics over the last years & the answer is simple:
Money.
People didn’t just all of a sudden become more racist - “concern” about immigration has never tracked with the actual numbers.
But there’s been a huge amount of money pumped into pounding away at that message, targeting people, playing on their fears & vulnerabilities, funding misinformation channels & influencers.
I always say in the face of all that the persistence of nuanced & decent positions on immigration along the British public speaks to what a pro immigrant, generally anti racist & integrated society we have built. But with enough money & enough time, they can chip it away, and they are.
🚨 THIS is how Reform’s £72 MILLION Flush Fund will flood UK
Polly Mackenzie brilliantly explains the power of political microtargeting.
We saw it during Brexit: different groups of voters could be identified online and sold completely contradictory versions of what Brexit would deliver.
Worried about immigration and the NHS? Target that.
Believe EU freedom of movement discriminated against Commonwealth and Asian migration? Target that.
Same campaign. Different promise. Different voter.
And Brexit ultimately produced something rather different: EU migration fell while non-EU migration rose dramatically.
Now imagine what Reform can do with £72 MILLION from two billionaires, poured into Facebook, TikTok, X and other digital campaigning.
This isn’t simply a war chest for posters and leaflets.
It buys the ability to find your grievance and sell you the version of Reform designed specifically for you.
That is the power of the Flush Fund.
A crytpo billionaire (pardoned by another crypto billionaire) donates millions to the MP who has been personally funded by another crypto billionaire and is on the payroll to promote crypto.
All sounds squeaky clean.

Imagine needing a press release to remind the country that screaming at lifeboat crews is not, in fact, a coherent immigration policy.

We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:

Adobe emailed to say they’re increasing prices again.
Cool. I’m cancelling.
The prices keep going up, but the value doesn’t. I only use the desktop apps. I don’t need AI credits, cloud nonsense, bundled extras, or whatever product manager fever dream they’ve stapled onto Creative Cloud this quarter.
I just want the apps, Adobe. The apps.
Let this company die.

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist.
At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

Can we try and get #InvestigateFarage trending please,
because the powers that be don’t seem to be capable of doing such an investigation. They will investigate everyone but, it seems.

ICE murdered Renée Good in broad daylight. Less than 3 weeks later, they killed Alex Pretti, shooting him 10 times. Every day, we watch as people are ripped from their cars, their homes, their lives.
We can't allow ourselves to look away from this cruelty. Abolish ICE.

Answer: “It’s a demonstration of safety and security. We’re here to help.”
That’s how you de-escalate.
Not masks. Not threats. Not bullets.
