It's so nice to have a free console while my {targets} pipeline runs as an RStudio job: job::job({targets::tar_make()} @rstudiotips @rstatstweet @rstats4ds #rstats

1/ "Leadership is a repeatable skill, not an art." Over 25 years ago, I attended a leadership session at Netscape, run by Jim Barksdale. It was a single hour that profoundly impacted my career.

(Re)reading Christopher Alexander's work on pattern languages, it's striking how completely misguided the GoF book seems. The "patterns" in that book are not at all recognizable as a pattern language like the one presented in the Timeless Way of Building. For example,

It seems that while I was not looking many languages got support for pattern matching and immutable ADT-like types (in many cases through subtyping, though). Help me make an exhaustive list of those languages which have added them!

Resolution: I will no longer tolerate complicated programming languages. My mental space is like Silicon Valley; rent is high, and space is at a premium.

This is an aces post by @keavy on what it is like to work as a very senior engineer -- not "tech lead" -- in a sizable org once you have earned up respect and autonomy. keavy.com/work/thriving-on-t… Should be part of what every engineer reads when considering potential career paths. – at San Francisco, CA

The problem with SOLID principles is precisely that they are NOT principles. There are no axioms by which it can be proven that code satisfies "single responsibility", therefore it is not a principle. It's a vague heuristic at best... but such is grandpa OOP.
Are the SOLID principles applicable to Functional Programming? Of course. Functional programmers want to separate their code to avoid crosstalk between responsibilities and users. They want to minimize the number of modules affected by a change.
