@JonnElledge I think one lesser discussed reason is SO much food in this country was made with/cooked in animal fats or boiled. Both fell out of favour post war and without it aren't the same. I highly recommend having a look around the website Foods of England, it's fascinating.

One fascinating thing I learned is that the british cheese industry (which was once as diverse & local as the french) was essentially killed by the formation of the milk marketing board. They bought all milk for a fixed price. So farmers stopped being cheesemakers on the side.

It's literally impossible to get a lifetime driving ban in this country. No matter how clear-cut it is, you can just full on run someone over deliberately and you'll be back on the road before they've even got used to their disability road.cc/content/news/violent…

It's never a popular message, but I do feel quite often, and increasingly often, that living off money transferred in from other places has quite deeply damaged us up here. There isn't much sense of how much of what we have is paid for by other people's efforts made elsewhere.

"European cities are not, in the main, more successful than UK cities" > they are. You can look at this map from the OECD. Or I've pulled out the 1m to 5m population cities and made a bar chart.

Does Leeds actually not need a tram? Or any form of better public transport really? I'll just respond to two points of fact in this piece, which I think is a good summary of what I consider a very Conservative party anti-growth pro-decline summary. viewfromcullingworth.com/p/l…

@robmulholland listening to the patreon pod. Genuinely don't do yoga for a bad back. Good chance it will make it worse. It's terrible for bad backs. Do pilates. It's a fundamentally different thing designed for injury recovery & works back/core/accessory muscles better.

take this advice from someone who massively hurt their back doing yoga only to google it and find out it's not recommended for bad backs, and back injuries are really common. Physios always recommend pilates and there is a reason.

@RM_Transit following on from your video on UK bus franchising you might find this interesting. This is a local government association/urban transport group report into why the 2017 Bus Services Act hasn't revolutionised buses in the UK & won't as is. local.gov.uk/publications/sm…

One of the things I think the video did miss was that the law technically allows bus franchising but was written in such a way as to make it effectively impossible for all LAs barring big metro mayor MCAs. Most councils don't have the right to franchise, only to ask if they can.

I can't believe they finally went and did it and finally gave @Thephilellis the nomination for the proper main prize he's deserved for years. Consistently my favourite comedian at the fringe.

Range Rover blocking a bin lorry and parked across a dropped kerb, obstructing people in wheelchairs and those with prams, and forcing pedestrians into the road. Slow clap for every Councillor and ‘concerned resident’ who fought to keep the streets of Soho choked with cars.
