We told you these cops wouldn't stop at Palestinian solidarity protests.
They are fully funded to prevent any meaningful disruptions to the plans of the ruling class.
The right to peaceful protest is fundamental, but it does not extend to obstructing lawful work.
Â
Following a recent demonstration concerning the removal of bike lanes, Chief @TPSMyronDemkiw reinforces that while individuals have the right to express their views, interfering with lawful work may result in criminal charges.
Â
We urge everyone to follow the lawful directions of officers on scene, who are there to maintain public safety.

I'm reposting this below because it's a very clear condensation of the three major claims the holders of big capital - banks, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, corporations, insurance funds, private pension funds, very rich individuals etc. - require us to keep believing. Suggest a programme of public spending and investment to reboot an ailing economy, and you'll have these warnings immediately fired back at you. Should we worry? Yes and no. It's very complex, so it's a long read and I'm forced to omit a lot of stuff, but bear with me, I'll try to boil it down.
The claims:
1. Taxes and government borrowing from international bond markets fund public spending.
2. These international bond markets will discipline any government that runs an unfunded deficit, principally by jacking up yields to make borrowing more expensive.
4. Capital will flee the country and invest elsewhere.
OK, spoiler for those short of time. Are any of these claims true? Yes, but only because Western nations continue to believe them and keep electing politicians who, along with central bankers, operate their fiat money systems in accordance with the global system these claims represent. Politically and ideologically yes, technically no. We're conditioned to think that this belief system is 'reality'. This is how belief systems have always worked - metaphysical claims on reality are what the philosophers call 'ontology', often selected and justified by naturalised ethics - this is real, it's just the way things are and it's good (or evil). The basis of this particular and very recently established (300 years or so) belief system is that capitalist markets are good (fair, efficient etc.) and national states representing organised workers are bad (tyrannical, inefficient etc.). So let markets work their magic and allow the state to intervene minimally only when they hit problems (crashes, recessions, unemployment etc.) that can always be overcome - calm down, no sweat, just keep it going. Politics is reduced to the degree of intervention we should tolerate, nothing more, but, whenever possible, less.
So, the bankers, economists, politicians and hacks you see on the telly all the time looking knowledgeable, clever and rational - steady hand on the tiller! - are either 1) subjects of an ontological-ethical belief system they want you to be subjects of too, or 2) liars who know it's just a belief system but want people to keep believing it's real and letting it run as a globally locked-in system because it enriches them and their pals.
A little more detail - what are these bond markets and why can capital just up and run off somewhere else when it wants? Bonds first appeared in C12 Venice as forced loans to fund a war. It all went pear-shaped, the Doge was executed by a mob of angry rich people and hired thugs, and loans were consolidated into a fund called the Monte Vecchio. It paid 5% interest - hey guys, free money to make us richer! - so the richies enjoyed it and didn't press for the repayment of the principal because that would reduce the interest, which later became known as the 'yield' as secondary markets developed in which more interest could be extracted. So, don't ask for it all back, just keep it rolling, forever if you can. Free money forever, and even more when freely trading on secondary markets with discounts. Usurer's Heaven on Earth!
In those days central banks and paper money didn't exist. So governments relied on metallic coins accumulated by the richies extracting labour and produce and doing dodgy deals on coin markets like the Rialto. After that a lot of stuff happened regarding coins and metal, but if we fast forward to the C16 coin values were set by decree (face value) rather than metallic value. Between C17 and C19 paper currencies were issued backed by silver and gold reserves. Government bonds were centralised first in C17 Netherlands. Of course the VOC (Dutch East India Company) loved this as a fairly reliable stash for its boatloads of spare dosh paying yields. Bonds were more reliable than the unstable private banking system because government land and tax were the endless assets of last resort - they even had VAT!
The UK set up its central bank in 1694 under invited Dutch influence and immediately started selling gilts. The richies with spare dosh immediately fell in love with it. Things started moving faster in C18 as UK bondholders struck up friendly relations with politicians to establish dependency on secondary bond markets. Beginning with the famous 'coffee-house trade' - legend has it they liked coffee because it kept them alert while doing dodgy deals - secondary markets developed as a powerful force. The principle is simple - if bond buyers can get higher yields and lower prices in the secondary private trading market, governments are pressured to match them. But only if the politicians and central bankers are friendly. They have to be friendly. And it helps if they're believers in the magic of markets and the ethical notion that savers and investors are glorifying God by making themselves rich and trickling bits of it down to the Godly but less deserving poor.
Of course, now that we had central banks, paper money and government accounting ledgers, fiat currency was used in emergencies, such as the Napoleonic Wars and WWI, but that was kept quiet. The very idea that governments can create money endogenously (from within) by fiat - Franklin and Lincoln also did it in the USA - rather than relying on interest-bearing loans from private moneylenders calling themselves 'bondholders' must be seen as evil. Abandon hope all ye who do this, by Jove! J.M. Keynes worked in the Treasury during WWI, and legend has it that he saw officials fabricating bond sales in order to keep politicians and the public alike believing that private loans are essential.
Bond markets were rolled out across Europe in C19. Yes, the Rothschilds were heavily involved but let's not start blaming the Jooz because that's not the case. It was the richies combined doing it. In C20 a lot of stuff happened as the UK left the gold standard in 1931, then after 1944 Bretton Woods set up a gold exchange standard based on dollar convertibility and imposed capital controls to ensure at least some profits were reinvested in domestic economies. The richies didn't like any of this, and started circumventing these controls via the Eurodollar market.
Between 1971 and 1978 Western nations abandoned Bretton Woods and the gold exchange standard. Free-floating fiat money was adopted. The richies understood the necessity and potential advantages (for them) of this but also saw it as dodgy because people might get the idea that democratic (one day!) governments can issue currency to spend and invest, thereby crowding out mega-rich private lenders and cutting back on their free money. What better mechanism to impose fiscal discipline on governments than the secondary bond markets and their vicious cousin the FX (foreign exchange) markets? All they need are friendly politicians, bankers, economists and hacks. Easy gig - plenty of them, either true believers or practiced liars. So, after 1979, the plan was to set big capital free to circulate around the world, like it did in the (for them) good old days of Empire, funnelling it through global bond markets and FX markets, enriching themselves and simultaneously imposing strict fiscal discipline on governments.
By the way, lately, rapidly developing nations such as China have used massive dollops of public investment and capital controls to boost their economies. So the richies and their little helpers try to convince us to hate them as tyrants and watch as their economy eventually collapses into a vortex of unpayable debt - which it hasn't, of course, but we're supposed to live in hope.
In 1979 the first thing the Thatcherites did was abandon capital controls. Other Western nations got the idea and stock (the productive end is more risky, so careful!), bond and FX markets (less risky and lucrative!) - the 'money markets' - were rolled out globally after 1980 by a powerful politician/banker/investor/media alliance whose adherents firmly believe (or want us to) that money markets should discipline and control governments. Of course they also gift them safe savings and endless oodles of free money in the form of yields, but you know, that's just a little sweetener for the valiant 'risk takers'..... even though these markets aren't very risky.
Technical disempowerment would be quite simple - firm policies in the primary sales, central bank intervention, fixed-rate, non-tradable bonds and capital controls to throttle the secondary market and FX markets - but this would require coordinated policies initially across the G10.... or G8 first, because the Brits and Yanks wouldn't have it, would they? Some nation must be brave and set the ball rolling. We simply lack the politicians willing and able to do this. And we continue believing. Machiavelli said the best way to instill belief is fear - divine punishment. This is how it works. The markets are the divine supplier of fairness, efficiency, consumer democracy and prosperity to Godly (optional these days) sovereign individuals. Disobey them and we will be punished. Escaping this will be as big a leap for freedom as escaping from the Mediaeval Catholic Church.
Replying to @RichardJMurphy
If "taxpayers' money" is a myth and governments can just endlessly finance themselves by creating ledger entries, why do sovereign bond markets exist? As we just saw discussed this morning, the moment a government tries to actually operate on this MMT fantasy and run massive unfunded deficits, international bond markets price their debt at junk status and capital flees. You are advertising an economic fairy tale Richard.

Two weeks ago, Canada adopted another round of sanctions against Iran. Canadian leftists backing a public letter criticizing Iran invariably ignored Ottawaâs latest contravention of international law in service of the supreme international crime.
On August 14 Canada provided another bout of assistance to the US/Israeli aggression by sanctioning five more Iranian officials. In response the Iranian Canadian Congress sent a letter to the prime minister criticizing the latest round of (probably illegal) sanctions. Canadian sanctions are part of a near unique, decades old, bid to isolate that country. Ottawaâs principle justification for attacking Iran is to cite the governmentâs human rights violations, often regarding prisoners.
Itâs rank hypocrisy. Canada backed the Shah, who had brutal torture dungeons, until the people forced him out in 1979. Soon after the revolution Ottawa severed relations with Tehran and backed Iraqâs aggression against its neighbour. Previously, Ottawa contributed to destroying Iranâs nascent democracy and returning the Shah to power.
Canadaâs mainstream left has a long tradition of alignment with Ottawa in foreign policy. Despite calling for the nationalization of numerous sectors of the Canadian economy, the leader of the CCF, M.J. Coldwell, criticized Iranâs nationalization of its oil in 1951. Mohammad Mossadeghâs move to nationalize Iranâs oil would lead the US and UK to orchestrate his overthrow in 1953.The CCF failed (or at least itâs not recorded in Hansard) to criticize Ottawa for backing the overthrow of Iranâs first popularly elected prime minister.
More recently, the NDP sponsored Irwin Cotlerâs so-called Iran Accountability Week in the 2010s. Current NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson has repeatedly called for more sanctions on Iran and expressed support for the Israeli/US armed and funded destabilization campaign in January that was part of their aggression against that country.
John Clarke, Matthew Behrens, Desmond Cole and other Canadian leftists promoting the recent public letter âTo Iranâs political prisoners, trapped âbetween two blades of a scissorsââ downplay the imperial context and the resulting political responsibility. Published in English in a liberal imperialist outlet, the letter two sided Iranian âpolitical prisonersâ and US/Israeli aggression with the Guardian sub headline explicitly stating, âOn one side, you face the domination of the Islamic Republic; on the other, the imperialist forces that republic claims to stand against.â
Clarke, Behrens and Cole have barely made a peep about Canada breaking off relations, listing Iran a state sponsor of terror, stealing Iranian assets or a few dozen rounds of sanctions on the country. While it seems to be normalized in our western chauvinist political culture, itâs utterly deranged for self-identified internationalists, anti-imperialists or even simple supporters of international law to say more about Iranian prisoners than Canadaâs sanctions on that country.
Itâs also bizarre for anyone supporting Palestinians to talk more about prisoners in Iran than about Iranâs role in challenging Zionist domination of the region. In recent years Iran and Yemen are the only countries that have provided genuine material opposition to the lawless genocidal Jewish supremacist state. Why applaud South Africa for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice, but not Iran for assisting Hezbollah and Ansar Allah (Houthis) to launch rockets at Israel during the worst of the horrors in Gaza? Does anyone truly believe the genocidal apartheid is more likely to listen to international law than force of arms?
Itâs revealing when someone who says they stand with Palestinians talks more about prisoners in Iran, then that countryâs role in challenging Zionist domination of the region.
Ditto for those who oppose the US empire. In recent months Tehran has destroyed US bases across the region and has forced the Pentagon to permanently withdraw from some of them.
Why would a Canadian leftist give greater credence to a letter two siding Iranian prisoners and US/Israeli aggression than a concurrent Iranian Canadian Congress letter to the prime minister criticizing sanctions and Ottawaâs support for the supreme international crime?
This seems a lot like someone claiming to be âon the leftâ attacking a unionâs leadership while that union is in the middle of a strike against a vicious employer trying to crush the union.

This is pretty insane: the U.S. just tried to literally re-colonize part of the Philippines.
They did so under the so-called "Pax Silica" initiative, the brainchild of - surprise, surprise - an ex-Palantir guy named Jacob Helberg who now runs U.S. economic "diplomacy" from the State Department.
It's causing a big outcry in the Philippines, which is quite a feat given this is by far the most US-friendly country in Southeast Asia.
If you're the US and you're getting the Marcos administration - of all governments - to push back on sovereignty, you've really overplayed your hand.
What is the "Pax Silica" initiative? In a nutshell it's about the US getting other countries to commit to restructuring their AI tech infrastructure around a US-led stack. It's basically vendor lock-in: you hand over your critical minerals, align your export controls with Washington's, regulate AI the way America wants, and in return you get to be a US "trusted partner," whatever that means these days.
In essence, let's not kid ourselves, it's all about China: this is the US's initiative to "win the AI race" by getting other countries to contractually commit to keeping China out of their tech supply chains. When you can't preserve your lead through innovation, you seek to lock countries in contractually.
For instance as a country, this would mean telling Huawei they can't sell you AI chips, and telling Chinese firms they can't invest in your data centers - even if they're better and cheaper. It's not about choosing the best technology, it's about choosing the right flag.
But in this instance, the US went much further still: they literally tried to carve out 4,000 acres of Philippine territory (in New Clark City, 60 miles north of Manila) to be governed under US common law with diplomatic immunity - the first arrangement of its kind anywhere in the modern world.
This is according to the WSJ who ran the story last month (wsj.com/world/asia/u-s-to-crâŚ) as if it was a done deal (it wasn't).
Heard about the "French concession" or "British concession" in China during the century of humiliation? Same thing: the US basically asked for an "American concession" in the Philippines.
Unsurprisingly, there was quite a bit of backlash in the country with for instance the Peasant Movement of the Philippines (KMP) calling it a âmassive selloutâ of the countryâs land, minerals, and sovereignty (punto.com.ph/us-led-pax-siliâŚ).
So much so that the Philippines' government - namely Joshua Bingcang, president and chief executive of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) - issued a statement saying that the Philippines had rejected US proposals that would place the project beyond local jurisdiction (asianews.network/philippinesâŚ).
Note, by the way, this delicious irony: the BCDA is the government agency that was created in 1992 specifically to convert former US military bases at Clark and Subic Bay after the Philippines spent decades negotiating their closure. New Clark City - where the Pax Silica's hub would go - is built on the old Clark Air Base.
So the agency whose entire reason for existing is to turn former American colonial territory (i.e. US military bases) into sovereign Philippine land is the one now being asked to hand part of that very same land back under US jurisdiction (and, apparently, declined).
Of course though, blocking this specific jurisdiction grab doesn't change the bigger picture. The Philippines is still a Pax Silica signatory, and Pax Silica itself is structurally neocolonial: you supply the cheap labor and raw materials, align your export controls and regulations with Washington's, cut yourself off from the world's rising technological powerhouse - and in exchange you get assembly jobs and the privilege of getting a pat on the head and being called a "trusted partner."
They dropped the most cartoonishly colonial demand - governing Philippine soil under US law - but the underlying architecture is the same: you serve America's supply chain, on America's terms, and you relinquish your sovereign right to trade with whoever offers the best deal.

For those who don't know, Gadaffi's Great Man Made River Project was in the process of re-greening the entire Libyan Sahara and part of the Sahel using vast underground fossil water reserves.
So when the White People Coalition Army arrived in 2011, they bombed the project sites and even its pipe factory so that the Sahara and North Sahel would remain poor, underpopulated, and eternally dependent on food imports.
Little history lesson.
Why Did The West Destroy Libyaâs Water Supply In 2011?
Did you know that the West destroyed one of the largest water infrastructure projects ever attempted in human history, just to punish the sovereign African country that created this project?
In this report for the Spearhead, @okorieuche_ sheds light on Libyaâs fabled and tragically ill-fated Great Man-made River Project (GMRP), a project that could have sustained Libyaâs water supply into the distant future, and transformed the wider Saharan and Sahelian regions of Africa, geologically and economically, for the better, had NATO not carried out its illegal invasion of Libya in 2011 and murdered its popular, revolutionary leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Socialists blocked by NDP brass launch new movement
On Sunday, May 24, activists from across the country will gather in Toronto and on-line for the Capitalism Canât Be Fixed conference. They will shape the next phase of a campaign challenging Mark Carneyâs pro-corporate, anti-Indigenous and hyper-militarist agenda â a campaign that began when the NDP Socialist Caucus asked author Yves Engler to run for leadership of the NDP.
The conference will discuss the case for breaking from the NDP to build an independent socialist movement, and how to pressure Avi Lewis and the NDP from the left. The gathering will consider running candidates in municipal elections and whether to organize a counter-summit when Mark Carney hosts leading representatives of global capital in Toronto in mid-September.
âA warmongering sociopath leads the United States, yet not a single mainstream Canadian politician is calling for a pause to hundreds of bilateral military accords and officer exchanges with an armed forces headed by a president who has threatened annexation,â noted Yves Engler. âAs Mark Carney radically increases military spending in line with Donald Trumpâs demands, the NDP Premier of British Columbia and the Mayor of Toronto are auditioning their cities to be headquarters for a new global war bank. Meanwhile, federal NDP leader Avi Lewis is yet to question whether a Canadian city should be turned into a hub of militarism for decades to come. In this political moment, what progressive can doubt the need for a genuinely anti-militarist, internationalist and socialist organization?â
Invited guest speakers include U.S. congressional candidate Kshama Sawant, journalist and lawyer Dimitri Lascaris, anti-war activist Tamara Lorincz, academic Kevin MacKay, author Yves Engler, Palestinian scholar Ghada Sasa and Indigenous campaigner Clayton Thomas-MĂźller.
The conference is based on a shared policy platform crafted by 45 activists and researchers over a three-month period. Since its October release, Capitalism Canât Be Fixed â Onward to a Socialist Future has likely become the most widely read anti-capitalist document in Canada. The campaign had a prominent presence at the recent NDP and Canadian Labour Congress conventions, and holds a weekly âWednesday webinarâ education series.

When I worked at CBC, seniors rejected my pitch to interview genocide scholars on Gaza and forced me to produce an interview with Alinejad on how the West should support regime change in Iran.
Few Iranian American voices have been as supportive of bombing Iran, or as aggressive in defaming opponents of war, as Masih Alinejad.
But now that it's clear that the war has been a disaster, Alinejad predictably backtracks and tries to portray herself as a victim.
But her contemptible role will not be forgotten.
She betrayed two peoples here: The Iranian people, whose blood is on her hands, and the American people, whose military she treated as her private mercenary army.
