We here at GBV are very interested in what @recomposelife life is working to accomplish. While 70% of Vermonters choose cremation almost all compost food scraps and farmers their livestock. It is a logical option for Vermonters to want and #Recomposition is a replicable model.
I always enjoy speaking with Ken Picard of @sevendaysvt This time it was about human composting (a la @recomposelife) and its possible future in Vermont. Glad to see @GreenBurialVT get mentioned too. sevendaysvt.com/vermont/wtf-…

YAY! @recomposelife we here in #VT are so excited about this process and cheering you on across the country!
What a joy to hear these folks testify at the Senate Committee hearing yesterday! Funeral directors, chaplains, caring individuals...working hard to bring you green death care options! @peoplesmemorial @restingwaters Watch: bit.ly/2ssrR0s (50') @AshokaUS @echoinggreen 🌱
This is a wonderful and informative piece about #greenburial

This features our president and co-founder, Michelle Acciavatti. We’re hoping this inspires people in Vermont to create spaces like these in our many, many acres of conserved land as well as land that needs to be conserved!

Nothing new for those of you familiar with #greenburial, but a great introduction or review. Plus a look at @recomposelife, which is a great green option for urban areas and #aquamation an interesting green alternative to cremation

Friendly reminder that #cremains aren’t good for the environment. Mainly sodium phosphate with a pH of 11.4 they kill plant life unless amendmended with compost. @MemorialReefs reef balls, tattoo ink, jewelry, and pottery are all great, safe, alternatives to scattering&burial

I spend a lot of time talking about this as the president of @GreenBurialVT cremains are salty w/a pH of 11.4. You can’t grow a tree in ashes w/o amendment with compost. If being a tree is important plant a sapling (not a seed, not all seeds germinate) at your green burial site

Vermont has the highest #cremation rate in the US in part b/c of insufficient access to #greenburial, but also because it is the most cost effective mode of disposition. This is a great script for figuring the environmental impact and finding a place with at least carbon offsets

What frustrates us about this @sevendaysvt story is that it doesn’t mention that the majority of cemeteries in Vermont require you to buy a vault- which is a huge expense and prevents your body and its biodegradable container from being recycled into the ecosystem

While #recompose may not seem as pressing an issue in a state with so much open space, it is still valuable to think about the space we design for bodies and how to allow for natural decomposition in space-contained environments
There are several groups working to bring conservation burial to Vermont. We can protect our green mountains and open grasslands creating and restoring habitat for pollinators, ground nesting birds (like the Hermit Thrush) and hardwood trees for generations by creating cemeteries
