Biologists working for Katmai National Park carefully & consistently maintain records of the identifying characteristics of individual bears every year, & each bear identified is assigned a unique identification number.

While they may seem arbitrary, it’s very important to respect the rules of the academic hierarchy. E.g. you’re only allowed to walk on the grass at King’s College, Cambridge, if you’re a Senior Member of the College OR if you think requiring a PhD to step on the grass is stupid.
