Statement of the Green Party of Ukraine
The Green Party of Ukraine (GPU) expresses its deep disappointment with recent statements by newly elected Australian Greens leader Senator David Shoebridge regarding the refusal to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
We sincerely thank the Australian Greens for supporting humanitarian missions and calling for a complete embargo on Russian oil. At the same time, we emphasise that refusing to provide defensive weapons to a country waging a just war of liberation is a dangerous illusion that plays into the hands of the aggressor, Vladimir Putin.
The Green Party of Ukraine emphasises:
Dogmatic pacifism kills. As part of the global environmental movement, we share a commitment to peace. However, pacifism in the face of a ruthless invader does not stop war — it leads to occupation and the destruction of an entire nation. Ukraine is exercising its legitimate right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The absurdity of a “UN veto”. Senator Shoebridge’s demand that arms supplies be authorised through the UN Security Council, where Russia holds the power of veto, is detached from reality. It is equivalent to asking a criminal for permission to call the police.
Russia’s war is causing massive ecocide. Russian forces deliberately destroy dams, mine millions of hectares of Ukraine’s fertile black soil, burn unique nature reserves and poison Europe’s water resources. Environmental protection is impossible without protecting the people who live in that environment. The only way to stop this ecological catastrophe is to stop the Russian army by force.
Unity among the global Greens. Green parties across Europe have long recognised this threat. They are at the forefront of political forces demanding maximum military assistance for Ukraine. We call on our Australian colleagues to follow the example of their European Green counterparts.
The Green Party of Ukraine welcomes the position taken by Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and those members of the Australian Greens who have publicly spoken out in defence of Ukraine.
We call on David Shoebridge to reconsider his position, listen to the voices of Ukrainian environmentalists and support the provision of defensive weapons to Ukraine. Only victory over the aggressor can restore lasting peace and security to the European continent.

Fear of Trump is dissipating.

Ukraine’s freedom is not President Trump’s to bargain away.
He is wrong to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, wrong to blame President Zelensky for prolonging Putin’s war, and wrong to undermine a nation fighting for its right to exist. Russia is the aggressor. Always has been. Reward Russia, and we should expect to see more aggression, including from other countries. We can also kiss goodbye to any just and lasting peace.
This is why Conservatives have stood with Ukraine against Putin. Ukraine’s future belongs to Ukrainians. They alone have the right to choose their president, and we stand with President Zelensky because he fights not for himself, but for the survival of his country and his people.

What role will Australia play in the global intelligence economy?
I’ll have more to say in this soon, but appreciated this great @Diplomat_APAC writeup by @MConleytyler and @grantwyeth, which captured some of my remarks at The Sydney Dialogue:
“As @AEI’s Ryan Fedasiuk put it, middle powers have a path forward if they ‘conceive of AI as a global megaproject which everyone can contribute to.’ Importantly, ‘Sovereignty doesn’t mean autarky. Sovereignty means being able to choose your own dependencies rather than having them foisted on you.’”
Great to speak alongside reps from the Australia Signals Directorate, @OpenAI’s Ann O’Leary, @AnthropicAI’s Jeff Bleich, Assistant Minister @Charlton_AB, and others.

Vital read from @cafreeland explaining why and how Canada won't, and can't, back down to Trump's threats.

Many of America’s allies have capitulated to the Trump administration’s tariffs, @cafreeland writes. But her experience as Canada’s international trade minister and foreign minister during the first Trump administration suggests another strategy: theatlantic.com/internationa…

With the 30th anniversary of @suedeHQ's Coming Up album, I thought I'd write a widescreen review of the record. On how they transitioned from the loss of Bernard Butler to create a pop pastiche of themselves. A concept album about Suede itself.

A piece of mine on why One Nation is going after Andrew Hastie. On why the rule of law offends their worldview. And why they wrap themselves in the flag as a ruse to undermine the country’s institutions.
