So, did Los Angeles cut the Fire Department budget or increase it? There are lots of people trying to score political points on that question. If you are among the exclusive group of people who care about understanding the more complicated reality, here is a brief thread. 1/6

I'm honestly on the verge of tears. LA never had fires this frequently or this bad when I was growing up. With the state just getting hotter and drier by the year, how can you NOT think about our leaders failing to do more to mitigate the impact of climate change?

This is truly a nightmare scenario for Los Angeles. Mass destruction has already ensued, and four separate infernos are raging out of control tonight as winds continue rising toward 100 mph, aiming right at dense residential neighborhoods in the USA's most populous county.

A friend who lives in Pacific Palisades sent me these horrific videos of the fire. He just evacuated and said traffic was so bad people abandoned their cars.

This sounds like an amazing time!
in my latest exploration of Seattle subcultures and hobbies I joined a group of friends for their traditional gathering: Shark & Whiskey movie night. It was fun and silly and also a way to keep a friend group together as life keeps pulling it apart thestranger.com/play-date/20…

In June, a woman named Stephenie reached out to @propublica. An outreach worker told her we were reporting on cities conducting sweeps of homeless encampments, and she had a story to tell. 🧵

It should disturb anyone who cares for the basic dignity of other people that our politics allow for this, and is a genuine warning sign of what's to come. What is the moral and social value of humiliating another human being? What civic purpose does this serve?
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a bill to ban trans people from using the bathroom, locker room, or changing facility on all federal property. This will not protect anyone, but it is an attempt to push trans people out of public life.

INBOX: The SIFF Cinema Egyptian is going to be closed for "the foreseeable future and the Fine Arts building leadership expect that it will take multiple months of building closure to assess, repair and reopen." Sad news especially during what is a big time of the year for film.
