โWhy do some British people dislike Donald Trump?โ
Nate White, an eloquent and witty English writer, gave this magnificent answer:
Trump lacks certain qualities that the British traditionally value.
He has no nobility, no charm, no composure, no gravitas, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour, and no grace โ qualities with which, strangely enough, his predecessor, Mr Obama, was abundantly blessed.
Although Trump may be ridiculous, he has never said anything ironic, amusing, or even remotely funny โ not once, ever. I do not mean this rhetorically. I mean it literally: never. To the British, a lack of humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it is a fact. He does not even seem to understand what a joke is. To him, a joke is a crude remark, an illiterate insult, an act of casual cruelty.
Trump is like a troll: he never laughs or enjoys himself; he merely squeals with delight or derision.
And the most frightening thing is that he does not merely utter crude and stupid insults: he actually means them. His mind is nothing more than a robotic algorithm of petty prejudices and instinctive malice.
There is no irony in him, no complexity, no subtlety, no depth. Everything is superficial. What we see is a man without an inner world, without a soul.
In Britain, we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are courageous underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither courageous nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite.
He is not even merely a spoiled rich boy or a greedy fat cat. He is more like a giant white slug, a privileged Jabba the Hutt.
And, worse still, he is a bully.
When he finds himself among other bullies, he suddenly becomes a whining lackey.
He punches down โ something a gentleman should never, could never, and must never do โ and every blow he delivers is below the belt. He particularly enjoys attacking the vulnerable or the voiceless, and he kicks them when they are down.
That is why the fact that a substantial minority โ perhaps a third โ of Americans watch what he does, listen to what he says, and then think, โYes, he seems like my kind of guy,โ is a source of bewilderment and profound distress to the British.
After all, it is impossible to read a single tweet of his or hear him utter a sentence or two without staring into the abyss. He turns shallowness into an art form. He is the Picasso of pettiness, the Shakespeare of shit. His flaws are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on to infinity.
There have always been stupid people in the world, and villains have never been in short supply either. But rarely has stupidity been so evil, or evil so stupid.
He makes Nixon seem trustworthy and George W. Bush seem intelligent.
If Frankenstein had decided to create a monster composed entirely of human flaws, he would have created Trump, and the remorseful Dr Frankenstein would have cried out in despair, โMy God, what have I created?โ
If an idiot were a television show, Trump would be the entire set.

Apparently the French, Dutch, German and Danish mothers all had the exact same thought, in the exact same order, on the exact same day. Remarkable.

After Belfast, Iโve been looking at some of the most extreme accounts flooding UK discussions.
A striking number appear to have little or no genuine connection to the communities theyโre commenting on, yet theyโre relentlessly amplifying division, anger and far-right narratives.
Meanwhile, Xโs algorithm rewards outrage because outrage drives engagement.
At what point do we stop pretending this is an organic public conversation and start asking whether anonymous networks, bots, and location-masked accounts are helping inflame tensions in Britain?
The Government cannot keep ignoring the role social media platforms play in amplifying social unrest. #Belfast
I very much hope that'll be the first and last half-time show we ever see in any World Cup Final.

We were all Wayne Rooney watching that.

This appeal to "Briddish patriots" is really badly put together.
It's from @BFirstParty but uses the English flag extensively - so it's really just England First.
And cd they not have come up with anything better than scenes of a BF march rendered at double speed?
All a bit sad.

Last year JD Vance actually blamed Europe for America's 2003 invasion of Iraq because he says Europe couldn't say "no" to the United States when it starts new wars in the Middle East.

Getting really bored of MAGA ranting about "freeloading" Europeans.
The US does not spend a trillion dollars "on NATO." It spends it on a vast global military empire, with a mere 3.6% going toward their bases in Europe.
Meanwhile us "freeloading" Europeans spend $454 billion on our own defence.
The "freeloading" story is and always has been a lie to keep Americans angry and Europeans compliant.

This is ridiculous. Starmer didn't "pick a fight". He refused to join a war started without consulting Britain by a foreign power that hits us with tariffs, insults our troops and threatens our allies in Ukraine and Denmark
ANDREW NEIL: Starmer has picked a fight with our most important ally at a time of grave global peril and a hollowed out British military. It was a stupid thing to do.

How can anyone watch Trump's rambling speech at Davos and be in any doubt that he is not right in the head?
The man's not fit to run a PTA meeting.
When will his supporters wake up and admit he's doing them, and the world, harm?

By equating the European Union with the Third Reichโa regime responsible for systematic genocide, concentration camps, and World War IIโElon Musk not only trivializes the unspeakable horrors of National Socialism but also devalues โโany serious debate about regulation and democracy.
It's like comparing a speed limit to the Gestapo: absurd, tasteless, and intellectually bankrupt. The EU is not a totalitarian monstrosity but an alliance of 27 democracies that emerged after the horrors of the 20th centuryโincluding the Holocaust unleashed by Germanyโto ensure peace, prosperity, and human rights. Billions of euros are invested in climate protection, social welfare systems, and civil liberties, while Musk's X (formerly Twitter) has degenerated into a digital madhouse under his leadership: hate speech flourishes, fake news runs rampant, and journalists are silenced.
Who is the censor here?
Musk, who portrays himself as a freedom fighter while taking legal action in Europe for ignoring EU laws like the Digital Services Actโlaws designed to combat the very kind of propaganda he now promotesโis making a comparison that is not only historically inaccurate but cynical. It ignores the fact that the EU was built from the ruins of the Third Reich to make such dictatorships impossible forever.
Musk, a billionaire who benefits from US subsidies and grew up in apartheid-era South Africa, should focus on his own hubris. Instead of resorting to cheap provocations to grab attention, he could build a spaceship that doesn't explodeโor at least a tweet that doesn't cross the line of good taste.
Such pronouncements don't make him a hero; they make him a populist jester. It's time he stopped instrumentalizing history and learned what respect for victims truly means.
