We are changing how scientific research is done. By working to find a cure for NGLY1 Deficiency, we’re helping those suffering from countless other diseases.

Matt Wilsey’s story is one of determination & innovation. When his daughter was diagnosed with NGLY1 deficiency—an ultra-rare genetic disorder with only 130 known cases worldwide—Matt took an unconventional path: he built @gracescience, a company dedicated to curing the disease. Without a background in biology, Matt relied on relentless learning, assembling a top-tier team of scientists, and a startup mindset to tackle the problem. Matt recently joined a16z general partner, @JorgeCondeBio, to discuss how he turned a personal tragedy into purpose, used a startup approach to drive scientific progress, and worked closely with the FDA to overcome regulatory challenges. Today is #RareDiseaseDay. There are ~7000 rare diseases. Most affect children & don’t have treatments. I'm thinking about all patients, advocates & researchers who work tirelessly to cure these diseases. @gracescience is close to my heart and working to cure #NGLY1.

In the case of rare diseases, a support network among family members is more important than ever. I encourage those initiatives that support research and cures and I express my closeness to those who ill, especially the children, and their families.

"The problem facing ultra-rare diseases is the lack of R&D dollars," said Matt Wilsey. "Many pharmaceutical companies avoid rare conditions because the markets are so small." stan.md/2p6CgRr
